Ann Casson Director succeeds in producing fast moving play for Huron Playhouse BY JOANNE BUCHANAN The Huron Country Playhouse's latest offering is the Alan Ayckbourn comedy hit, BEDROOM FARCE. The action unfolds on an effective three-bedroom set by Terry Nicholls and deals with the lives of four couples as their evening plans go awry. Leading the cast are seasoned pros Eric House and Ann Casson as Ernest and Delia, an elderly married couple whose most exciting entertainment on their wedding .anniversary would appear to be eating sardines on toast in bed. Marcia Kash is chanting as the newlywed Kate. She and husband Malcolm (Terrence Slater) have a housewarming party which is spoiled by the feuding of self-centered Trevor ( Anthony Bekenn) and his neurotic c-71/ 41/2/2y 37L1 ilEcicib29 cjinnicrEtsaty 4ftlIPPA .(1.3Et .(1/11/i.51i1 120,72 9c)/..LT farnify SHERM/1470 TRANSPORTATION PRESENTS C.N.E. The combination of seasoned, performers and clever symbolism has brought to the Blyth Festival, a simple play with consistent humor and touching moments. Miss Curran never leaves the audience bored with one scene, their senses are constantly alert as actresses like Anne Anglin and Patricia Vanstone allow the audience a'Peek at our next door neighbor. The small Ontario town production, about an annual Canada Day cake competition, begins with the arrival of "min in disguise," Sister Vivien Leigh Cleary ,(Laurel Paetz), who has stepped outside the confines of a convent to sample the outside world and determine the extent of her vows. Rather than an angel food cake, the nun has baked an ironically "decadent" Cleary Chocolate Cheesecake. Arriving in full Scout regalia is Ruby Abel (the well-known Blyth Festival actress, Anne Anglin). Ruby, the wife of Buckey Abel, a garage proprietor who collects Polaroid snapshots of car wrecks, does not reveal her cake until the latter portion of the play. She spends much of her time on stage comically snatching contestants' cakes and trying to ridicule Martha Britch (Patricia Vanstone), a throwback from the flower child era. Martha, trying to win the hearts of the local townspeople by entering the contest, is the best friend of Sister Vivien. tier cake, Heaven on Earth Carrot Cake, is appropriately named after her cafe run by and she and her husband Jake. A woman with a big heart, she is constantly under fire under the sharp tongue of Ruby "busy body" Abel. Next to arrive in a hurry, is Tiffany Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary Shirley &, Darrell Wood July 25, 1984 t for all Secord. She pops her be4.4 into the ABC romp, (the contestant' area) and inquires about her mother: Tittatix (Janet Land) throws 4tlerell Iota her Maier's plans of entering her w ding cake. She is to marry . Jeffrey, much to her mother's demise, the following day and is horrified that the entire town v!ill.see tbe cake before the big day. Dorothy Piner plays the part of Augusta Connois -Secord, Tiffany's rich and flighty mother. Her plan to enter the wedding cake is her first chance to catch a little of the limelight she has longed for all her life. Cake Walk's last contestant is Taylor Abbott (Andrew Martin Thompson) who is a surprise not only because he is a man but also because he causes sparks to fly for Lee Cleary as she falls madly in love at first sight. The archeologist has entered a King Tut Coconut Cake, hoping to gain respect for his success because of the lack of it in archeological fields. Glen Creamer, CKNX-TV interviewer, has his debut as the voice on the loudspeaker. His part is to broadcast the events that are occurring at the fictional fair. Director Katherine Kaszas, plays a major role in this story of success. She has managed to take a simple play of clever, "read between the line" dialogue and spice it up with scenes that leave us breathless. Elements of surprise are also there and one wonders if Vivien will ever tell Taylor of her true identity. By using spicy confrontations, like Martha and Ruby's shouting match, or Vivien and Taylor's admittance of a growing affection, both the director and playwright give us a play with all the ingredients of a professional production. Cake Walk will be staged at the Blyth Memorial Hall at matinee performances on July 26, August 2 and 4 and at evening shows on August 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, 14, 15 and 18. Anne Anglin is hilarious as the scheming Ruby Abel in the newest Blyth play. CAKE- WALK. The comedy. written by Colleen Curran. revolves around a cake baking contest. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOOT!
