Ice cream is 125 years old
Ottawa - Even though ice cream has been
known for 3000 years commercial produc-
tion began only in 1860. Before then ice
cream was served at the royal tables of Ita-
ly, France and England. King Charles I of
. England even paid his chef a pension to keep
the method of making ice cream secret.

The cast of LOVE IN THE BACK SEAT, from left to right, are Marcia Tratt, Hank Stinson
(kneeling), David Nairn and Annabel Kershaw. LOVE IN THE BACK SEAT Is the first
show of the Huron Country Playhouse II summer season. It opened July 11 and will run until
July 21.
Playhouse production
recalls rock 'n roll eras
BY JOANNE BUCHANAN
Remember the rock 'n roll of the fifties?
The flower power of the sixties? And the me -
generation of the seventies?
LOVE IN THE BACK SEAT, a Canadian
musical revue, now running at Playhouse II
in Grand Bend (until July 21), spans all
three of these eras with songs, dancing and.
comedy.
Written by Bill Hartley and Cliff Jones
(with music by Cliff Jones), LOVE follows
the lives of two couples, Ricky and Debbie
and Bobby and Bumpers, from adolescence
to adulthood.
David Nairn, who just finished appearing
in A THOUSAND CLOWNS on the
Playhouse's main stage, is Bobby, a "cool"
high school student who goes to college, gets .
married and has a child, drops out to
experience Woodstockand ends up divorced
and hanging around a disco while dressed
like John•Travolta.
Hank Stinson, who will play the title role
in Playhouse II's second production, BILLY
BISHOP GOES TO WAR, .is Ricky, a high
school "square" who becomes active as a
protestor and demonstrator in his college
days.
Marcia Tratt is Bumpers, a "fast" girl
with a reputation in high schoolwho marries
Bobby and puts him through college on her
salary as a go-go dancer, has a child,
divorces Bobby and becomes an
"intellectual"..
Annabel Kershaw is Debbie, a "nice" girl
in high school who dates Ricky but stays
high for most of the sixties. s -
Director Ron Ulrich, musical director
Michael Mulrooney and choreographer Lea
Parrell take the cast through a lively pace
on numbers like "Wheels", "Car Hop" and

One of the highlights of the show is a
parody on Sonny and Cher with the song,
"The Good Old Days are A-Changin"'.
Sex is very much at the forefront of this
musical with songs like . "Dear Mr.
Kimberly-Clark", "Hot Date" and "The Joy
of Sex". The characters find out about sex in
the back seat of a fifties model car which
remains on stage as an effective one and
only prop for the entire production.
It was uncomfortably warm inside
Playhouse. II on the opening night of LOVE
IN THE BACK SEAT but one is allowed to
purchase cool drinks to take inside and this
helps a lot.
Ontario Liberal Leader David Peterson
was a special guest at the opening and
offered his congratulations to the Playhouse
on its success so far. Peterson's' wife Shelley
performed on the Playhouse's main stage
last year as Helen Keller's mother in THE
MIRACLE WORKER and is currently
appearing in BEDROOM FARCE which
opened on the Playhouse's main stage last
night
