James Bonthron, who resides with
his daughter, Mrs. R. H. Collins, cele-
brated his 89th birthday. Mr. Bonth-
ron is a native of Fifeshire, Scotland,
and has lived in Huron county, 'sear
Exeter, for a half a century. having
been for many years a merchant at
Rodgerville. Mr. Bonthron retains
almost uninpared all his clearness of
intellect and enjoys reading and keep-
ing up with the current events of the
day. His many friends here and else-
where wish him continued and un-
alloyed happiness for years to come,

have been a fatal accident turned out
to be an excitine experience at the
Presbyterian S. S. picnic last Friday.
The lake was too rough to use the row
boats on it, and Dr. Kinsman, jr., was
successfully guiding one into the more
quiet water of the river, whenajust as
he Vita% in the most turbulent part, the
oarlock broke. A large breaker then
threw the boat into the trough also
sweeping away an oar. The heavy
river current then carried him out on
the lake. The Dr. used his remaining
oar to great advantage, sometimes
waving ib aloft as a signal and again
guiding the boat therewith. Happily
yotreg man, Hannon. Gill, noticed
the distressed boatman and set out
speedily for his relief. He found the
boat filled with water and the Dr, hi
gocarapirits considering his unpleasant
position. The Dr, is an excellent
swimmer, but the coldness of the
Water on account of the heavy rains
throws the swimmer in the danger of
receiving cramps. They had some
trouble in landing on account of the
heavy breakers,
