London firm relocating in Vanastra
VANASTRA - There's a reason for the
increased hustle and bustle in Vanastra
these days.
The Tuckersmith Township municipality
is preparing to welcome a new business GCI
Manufacturing Inc. from London.
The London based crane manufacturer
will relocate to Vanastra by the middle of
August. A 2.38 hectare (seven acre)
industrial site in Vanastra has been
acquired for the business.
In an interview with the London Free
Press, GCI Vice President Ray Shuman said
that high taxes and a desire to own its own
. .. main ___......e .... the rnmnanv
property were the main reasons for company for a time, but he is no longer
company's move from London.
The firm has been leasing property in east
London, but failed in a bid to buy the
propert r from a' German national. High
taxes, Mr. Shuman noted also effected the
company's decision.
"When you take, the business and property
taxes paid by this, company,' you, don't get
much change back from $100,000," he said of
the London location.
The Vanastra site will offer GCI lower
taxes and property which includes several,
buildings and the old parade square at the
former Canada Forces Base.
Work is presently being done to remodel
and update the property and Mr. Shuman
noted, "It will be. a first classfacility."
Employrrient at GCI varied. between 12
and 15 fulltime workers and they have been
'offered jobs at the. new plant. Over the past
two years employment -has fluctuated from
eight to 25 people. After moving to Vanastra,
GCI's work force will be "double or more,"
Mr: Shuman told the Free Press.
GCI Manufacturing Inc. was formed in
June, 1982, out of the remaining assets of the
former • General Crane Industries, which
went into receivership in December; •1981.
West German investor, Leo Gottwald of
Peter James Johnson, Dusseldorf' withdrew his financial support
only seven months -after tiecomitig a major
shareholder with an investment of $4
million.
The National Bank •of Canada requested
"fir ceiversp to secure $1.5 million worth of
loans. David Ghysels of Oxford, Ma ed Bacaa
former owner of the company, stepped
into the picture to take .controls of the new'
son of Harry and
Edna Johnson of R.R. 2•Goderich, received
h "L.L.B. degree at Osgood ...Hall Law
School convocation ceremonies on June 22.
