By Janet Tench
From the cover of this album stares an
affable looking chap with Sinatra -like blue
eyes. He does not appear to be the successful
rocker that he is - he seems more of the type
that listens to old Turtles' LPs on the

by Huey Lewis and the News it all falls into
place. The down-to-earth love songs (often
jazzy) have a relaxed, laid-back sound, like
Bad is Bad. For this reason, Sports will
appeal to the fans of early blues/jazz rock
'n roll. In this revival era of rock (with
bands like the slick Stray Cats) the almost

there is room for improvement. Lewis's
vocals are rough, a la Springsteen, but in
combination with the jazzy music it comes

Why is the album called Sports? The
jacket design encompasses pool, football,
baseball, fishing, horseracing, darts,
basketball, shooting and tennis. As well the
song themes, while not taking sports in the
sense that we use the term today, do deal
with a sport. There is a British term for it,
"do a little bit of sporting". What better title
for an album about the greatest sport of all:
love? Rating: 7.
