Really no surprise Everybody except the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans seem to be surprised at the 'close gap between themselves and the Detroit Tigers - but no one should be that surprised. While the Tigers have been tearing up the league with an incredible record of 36-8, the Blue Jays have been basking in their shado+s with a not too shabby record of 31- 14. The spotlight has been on the Tigers for too long - and it has benefited the Jays. Suddenly Detroit sports broadcasters have stomped on the panic button and are asking "Where did they come from?" The answer is so simple it's sickening - The Jays have been there all.along. Toronto has hovered between 7 and 111''2 games off the pace for three weeks. A couple of losses combined with Blue Jay wins soon closed the gap. There's no surprise here. It was just a simple case of the media getting caught up in Tiger fever. The second best record in baseball meant nothing. While Detroit and Toronto are rolling along quite nicely, fans shouldn't overlook the defending World Champion Baltimore Orioles. The Orioleshave. battled back from a disasterous start. The Birds are now comfortably in, third position in the American League East and in a position to Make a move. It's early yet and Baltimore knows it. As the man once said "It isn't over until it's over." Clinton Wlites drop opener sai The Mite boys, Clinton's newest entry • in the Tri -County Softball league, travelled to Brussels on May 23 to open their season. Un- . fortunately, the Brussels team did not prove to be very gracious hosts as they handed the Mites a 26-9' thrashing. With a monstrous . squad of 21 players, many seeing their first action, .confusion and excitement seemed to reign pis the locals were no match for the more establish- ed hothe team. ' Ryan Crawford was the only boy to • get two hits and singles went to Lee Gibbings, Jeff Oesch, Scott Wright, Ken Colquhoun, Mark. Falconer, Mery Gass, David.,I Iiltr., Hen Lobb and Danny Wildfong... Wright, Wildfong and Nathan Burns, all first time pitchers, shared the mound duties 'and did a respectable job. Many miscues in the field proved .costly as mostof the Brussels runs were unearned. The team is expected to show some improvement as the season progresses after sone roster ad- justments that will see several. players transferred to the less competitive township league.. • This should give the transfers a little more playing time and put them more at ease while leaving the Tri -County team with a more manageable number.. . The Mites first home game is not until June 6 at 7 p.m: at the Public School when they -entertain Wroxeter. Come out and give the -boys your support! "Water's not bad, come on in," appears to be what Clinton Recreation Director Kevin Duguay is saying. Actually, Mr. Duguay isn't coming out of the pool after a refreshing -dip. The camera caught Mr. Duguay making last minute inspections before repairs on the town pool begins. The project involves the building of a new wading pool, some painting of the main pool as well as some renovations. SEE STORY FOR DETAILS (Rod Hilts photo) Tykes blast Seaforth 27-5 • By T. Fox On. During a lengthy special meeting held on May 28, the committee passed several motions approving the wading pool replacement, at a cost of $7,500 and various repairs to the main pool. Recreation Director Kevin Duguay said that Ken Smith, a pool contractor from Seaforth was present at the meeting and answered questions regarding the swimming pool facility - maintenance and repair work. On a motion by committee member Bill Craig, it was moved that Mr. Smith proceed with the replacement of the wading pool as • stipulated by his price quotation on May 10 of $7,500. Mr. Duguay said that the committee would be incorporating a donation of $3,000 from the Clinton Monster Bingo Committee toward the wading pool project. • The new wading pool will be similar to the existing one but will have the added feature of a sprinkler system circulating the water supply. 1 It will be a nice attraction for the young children," Mr. Duguay said. The decision to replace the wading pool was made because it leaked. Work on the wading pool is expected to take two to three weeks and is to be completed by June 15. Mr. Duguay said that it will be ready for use in time for the June 22 official opening. Ministry. inspection It was decided at the May 10 meeting of the Recreation Committee that the Ministry of Health would be contacted to give an analysis of the condition of the pools. . On May 14, the ministry inspected the pools and a spokesman said the main pool would not require complete painting but suggested that the .pool bottom be brightened up. They also suggested that the pool undergo a sanitary flush with a highly concentrated solution. It was suggested that some. areas be patched up on the pool base. Mr. Duguay said that several chips and cracks that exist below the pool skinunmers will be repaired. On a motion by Jim Hunter, the committee moved to employ the three senior pool staff members as of June 11 to treat the pool basin and paint where necessary. The basin will be treated with a solution that will remove dirt, oil and algae growth that has accumulated in the pool over the winter months. Supplies and paint will be purchased through Ken Smith. Valves replaced On a motion by Bill Craig, the committee moved to replace two hydrostat valves located at the bottom of the pool to control ground water pressure. The valves are to be purchased and installed by Ken Smith Pools and according to Mr. Duguay the cost will be minimal. Apparently the old (original) valves weren't suitable for the drain structure. Stabilizer ordered The committee authorized the purchase of stabilizer at a cost not to exceed $350 from Ken Smith Pools. The stabilizer will be'used • on a' one year trial basis. Mr. • Duguay said the stabilizer aids in maintaining proper chlorine levels and protects the chlorine balance from the sun's rays. The stabilizer is expected to help the committee save on chlorine gas consumption. Floors treated The change room floors at the pool will be treated with muriatic acid to allow for the application of non -slip paint. This procedure wi11 also be carried out in the showers. - The committee also gave Mr. Duguay the responsibility of purchasing additional pool supplies and equipment. Mr. Duguay said pool "toys" such as flippers ( for children learning to swim), a first aid kit and 20 flutter boards (guarding aid) will be purchased. Midgets sweep Goderich By Shawn Lester The Clinton Midgets played their first game of the season against Goderich on May 20. They won by the score of 16-13. Travis Lyndon was 2 for 2 with 3 walks. One of his hits was a double. Kevin' Lee also hit well with a'.400 batting average. In the field Danny McGregor made a spec- tacular catch for an out. ' The Midgets second garne was in Clinton on May 24, against Goderich again. Shawn Lester hit 2 for 3, Dean Cartwright hit 3 for 3 with a double, Terry Cox hit 2 for 3 and the power hitter of the game was Robert Dupee hitting a triple and a double with a 2 for 4 average. Dean Cartwright reacted quickly to catch a line drive on. the mound. .Again Robert Dupee made a • play that most thought wouldn't be made to create an out. Chrtwright, while pitching had five strikeouts to keep Goderich off the scoreboard. Terry` Cox came in to finish the game and to hold the lead. Clinton won 14-4. In the Midgets third game played on May • 27 Shade and Steckle from Dashwood were the big guns for their team, backed up by the excellent pitching of Marty Merrier with six strikeouts and only allowing one walk. Clin- ton had difficulty in mastering the pitcher's curve. The resulting score was 7-4 for Dashwood. Robert Dupee hit 3 for 4 and Shawn Lester hit 2 for 3. David Stevenson- made an outstanding catch in right field. Also Travis Lyndon caught an over -the -shoulder catch which was excellent.
