The contest to choose the Queen for the Clinton Spring Fair is now in flaming with seven contestants entered. 10 years ago May 23, 1974 The restoration and renovation of Clinton's core business area will be -discussed at a special meeting at the Clinton Tpwn Hall. January 1, 1975 was set as the start of the beard growing contest that will be one of the highlights of Clinton's Centennial celebrations next year. The date was one of the items discussed at a general meeting of the centennial committee on May 15. Huron County has received approval for 14 programs under the federal government's Opportunities For Youth Program. The programs will receive funding totalling nearly $57,000. , 25 years ago May 21, 1959 There will be a work party needed at the Clinton Community Swimming Pool on May 22. As many men as show up will be used. The main work to be done is to fit windows to apply putty. One more teacher is required for the Clinton Public School. Members of the RCAF's Golden Hawks precision aerobatic team, now training at RCAF Station Chatham, New Brunswick, for their cross-country tour in connection with the RCAF's 35th Anniversary and the Golden Anniversary of Flight in Canada, can be seen beside one of their gold Sabres. They will fly at Clinton and Centralia on September 19. Last Wednesday, a meeting held for the purpose of readying the Scouts for camp, took place at the public school. A list of necessary articles .to take and a briefing on camp procedure was given to the new scouts. 50 years ago May 24, 1954 We do not like all these robberies in our town. We might just as well live in the city if this keeps up. Not a word of complaint has been heard about the fine rain we had Monday night. And it was not accompanied by devastating winds or anything alarming at all. Miss Barbara Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Scott, entertained 15 of her young friends on Monday afternoon to celebrate her eighth birthday. A very jolly time was spent by the young folk. 75 years ago May20,1909 The London Camp - About 2,000 men will go under canvas on Carling's Heights at London, on June 5, when the camp for the district will open. The camp will be of 12 day's duration and besides the regular infantry regiments of this district the First Hussars and sixth Field Battery will attend. Kind Words , A Winghamite was in Clinton recently, and called at the House of Refuge. The new wing has been furnished and occupied, and the additions to the waterworks system are a great improvement. Everything seems to be in the best Of order. The rooms are clean and tidy and comfortable and while the order is strict, kindness is the rule. There are nearly 100 inmates, and as some of them are past the 90th milestone of human life, the duty of caring for them is no sinecure. Mr. and Mrs.- Mutch seem admirably adapted for the position, and their duties are faithfully performed. Huron House of Refuge is well managed, and its inmates are apparently very comfortable and satisfied. 100 years ago May23,1811-4 On Thursday of last week a severe wind storm, accompanied with rain, passed over the northeast corner of Stanley Township. It completely unroofed an old log house belonging to Mr. Finlay McEwan, levelled nearly all the fences of Mr. Duncan McEwan, and uprooted or broke, a number of trees belonging to Mr. Avery and Mr. Grant. Drop them- Almost weekly commercial pedlars visit Clinton, solicit , orders for clothing, shirts, etc. and in not a few cases with success. The town has several first- class merchant tailors, who keep excellent stocks, and guarantee good fits; they pay taxes and in other ways contribute to the prosperity of the town. Then why send money away from home for articles that can be purchased just as cheap here? Miss Alice Smith (daughter of Mr. James Smith) has been seriously ill since her residence at Woodstock, with erysipelas, and is yet confined to her room.
