It look a; couple of phone calls at council's May 7 meeting before confirmation was made that the 'organization was willing to finance half of the project cost. Council was upset that no representatives from the Blyth Industrial Tournament group turned up to discuss whether the consensus was to seed or resod the ball field. Council had approached a member of the baseball organization to tell him that the issue would be on the May 7 meeting agenda and that he and other members were encouraged to attend. Initially the idea to resod the field came from a special meeting on January 25 when some people had expressed interest that Ontario Neighborhood Improvement plan. (ONIP) funds the village is receiving should be allocated"to the diamond. After hearing public input on the ball field sodding, council with the help of Village Engineer Art Clark drew up aplan to allot a maximum of $5,000 for the project (50 per cent of funds provided by the municipality) . Councillor Bill Howson received estimates of $4,700 to resod the field or $2,000 to seed it from Huron Landscaping in Lucknow. The project will also include the addition of a 10 - foot warning track around the edge of the home -run fence. The resodding route would take approximately 10 days while the seeding system would take longer, possibly as long as eight weeks depending on the weather. Council felt it wasn't up to them alone to make the decision of which route to 0 g "They haven't shown a hell of a lot of interest by not having any representation here tonight," Councillor Bill Manning said. "The ball sod was the ball people's idea not ours. When they first started this project .ci STANDARD) tbe Blyth inr) Come Celebrate MOWSUY with us!! The I!p should not have to pay for half the sod start with," Reeve Tom Cronin told court Halfway throughthe discussion Councillor Bill Howson teleplkoned Industrial Baseball Tournament Chairman Wayne McDougall and asked him..to come to the meeting. Upon arrival, Mr. Mefougall told council that he was as contused asthey were on the issue. When asked if there was any guarantee of recdvering money from the tournament group for the project, Mr. McDougall replied, "I really don't know." He summed up the situation by saying, "It's been a real screw up from the word go." Councillor Howson then made another telephone call to Blyth Industrial Baseball Tournament Treasurer Bruce Howson and asked hire whether his ball organization was ready to make a financial committment toward the project. It was confirmed that the .Industrial Ball Tournament will be putting between $2,800 and $2,900 into the - project. Council felt that seeding the field would take too long and would interfere with bookings because most of the baseball leagues in Blyth are scheduled to begin their regular seasons at the end of Nay. Sodding of the ball park is to take place sometime next week. Clerk Larry Walsh said the practice sessions will have to be held on the Radford Bali diamond. Furnauce problems Last month the furnance at, the Blyth Municipal office burned out and council is thinking of replacing the furnance with a system that may also take care of air conditioning and dehumidification of the building. Council is seriously considering the purchase of heat pump system for $6,044 from Lyle Youngblut of Blyth. Council is considering the system because it could help rid the building of a musty odor which has caused the village some embarrassment. Council also received some considerably less expensive estimates from Mr. Youngblut of $1,222.20 for an oilfurnance and $1,768 for an electric furnace and new electrical panel. Bill Bromley of Londesboro Submitted' an estimate of $1,425 for baseboard heaters. , Clerk Larry Walsh said that if the the village council went the heat pump route they would be eligible for .grants ranging between $900 to $1,800 under the Municipal Energy Conservation Program. Anywhere from 15 to 30 per cent of the costs can be refunded if the municipality can recover the costs in three years. - Council decided to delay a decision on the issue until they can find out more about the advantages "and disadvantages of a heat pump system. "What are we getting for an extra $4,500," Councillor Howson questioned. When asked if he could wait until a special meeting on May 22 beim 8 decision on the heating system would be made, Clerk Walsh joked, "I've been freezing for a month now, things can only get better." Committee established Council established a Ball Park Committee on April 5 consisting of councillors Lloyd Sippel, Bill Howson; Jim Button from Blyth Industrial Ball; Lori Hesselwood from the Baintoneers; Joan Leibold and Sharon Bromley from Blyth Minor Ball and Phil Black from Blyth Broomball. Jeff Sippel was hired to look after the bookings, the marking of the diamonds, managing the lights and to look after the finances at a rate of $1,000 for the season. The need to hire somebody for the job came up after Blyth Minor Ball said they no longer wanted to look after the diamonds. Jeff Sippel has looked after the diamonds for the past two years and ball teams had paid his salary. In the past Blyth Minor Ball looked after bookings and marking out the diamonds for free use of the facilities. - Pioneer Day held By Sheron Stadelmann Thursday, May. 3 was "Pioneer Day" at Blyth Public School in honor of Ontario's 200th birthday.
