Puppet Theatre ends series
THE NIGHTINGALE, by The Rag and.
Bone Puppet Theatre to be held on Satur-
day, May 5 at2 p.m. is the last event in the
Blyth Festival's children's series for this
season. This is a. classic fairytale set in An-
cient China and performed by costumed
puppeteer -storytellers and vivid, delicate
puppets.
In Ancient China, the Emperor has
everything; but he 'must choose between a
mechanical, clockwork nightingale, studded
-with precious jewels and a real nightingale
whose song is so beautifulit brings tears to
his eyes: The Nightingale is an introduction
for young people to one of the world's
greatest cultures and also teaches a univer-
sal moral.

Koffman; sunny Sunday music
By Shelley McPhee
A toe -tapping tremor shook the Blyth
Memorial, Hall on Sunday afternoon as a full
house crowd kept beat to the jazz sounds of
the'Moe-Hoffruarl-QUintet.
The high calibre of the pertorrnance
equalled. other top name artists that have
appeared in Blyth. Similar to comments
made by past performers, particularly
guitarist Ilona Boyd and pianist Andre
Gagnon, Moe Koffman praised the excellent
acoustics of the little hall and the joy of
performing to an intimate audience.
Local people have been fortunate to see
some of Canada's best musicians perform at
Blyth. The theatre offers a rare opportunity
to play to a small audience and allows
musicians to actually hear their own music,
not only the typical re-echoing of sounds of
larger halls.
For the audience the theatre offers the
same appeal and it was obvious from
Sunday's performance that both the
audience and the musicians were enjoying
the show.
For almost two hours Moe Koffman and
his band took the audience on a musical tour
of jazz. Their selections covered everything
from jazzed up Bach to the Brazilian beat,
from the big band swing sounds of Charlie
Barnett to Koffman's hit song Swinging
Shepherd Blues.
Moe Koffman's hit tune was on the charts
several years ago, still the audience
enthusiastically applauded the finale
number.
Jazz music is characterized by variations
on a melody -and -the Moe Koffman Quittet
took each song pn a free, spirited journey
through the flute, saxophone, guitar,
keyboards, drums and bass. Each were
individually featured and it was obvious
from the smiles on the musicians' faces that
there were thoroughly enjoying the
afternoon performance.
Audience applause and the toe -tapping
indicated that they too enjoyed the show.
Listening to light, easy going jazz music
seemed to be a perfect way to spend a
relaxing sunny, Sunday afternoon.
