The property owners have petitioned Clinton council to have the row of large pine trees cut down. The trees are several decades old and are situated on town property on a west side of East Street. The petitioning property owners feel that the trees are unsightly and they detract from the property value of surrounding homes. The petitioners are also concerned that the trees cause a safety hazard, particularly with the pine cones that can throw bicycles off balance. The council committee will study the petition and councillors plan to hold an on- site pine tree meeting to look at the problem. Severance fees increased Fees for severance, minor variance and permission applications have been increased in Clinton. The fee amounts may be reduced or waived, if required, by council or the committee of adjustment. Addictive poison Carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, pyrene and nicotine — inhaled purposely for pleasure? It's called smoking, but it's not a pleasure, it's an addiction. The amount of nicotine in a pack of cigarettes, given by a needle into the bloodstream, is• in itself lethal enough to cause instant death in an adult. Smoking is addictive and self-poisoning. If you smoke, isn't this reason enough to quit? Study looks to future • from page 1 are created, particularly along both highways, highway commercial development will be inhibited and pressures will continue on residential areas." Home Occupations Local Commercial Horne occupation businesses have been a controversial issue in Clinton Council chambers in the past. In Clinton home occupations are a "widespread phenomenon," according to the planning department study. Carrying out business activity from a private residence offers low overhead, tax benefits, convenience and minimal space requirements. The study noted, "Many home occupations are conducted in relative quiet, wholly internalized to the site in which they operate and inconspicuous; others can be disruptive and incompatible to a residential environment." Clinton's small population and compact residential area discourages the need for local commercial uses. Convenience stores and laundromats fall into this category, designed to meet the, needs of the neighborhood. At present, here is only one local commercial store in Clinton, the convenience shop on Victoria .btreet.
