A GRUMBLING CONTINGENT
Much dissatisfaction, it seems, ex-
isM among the Canadian coronation
contingent because of the arranges
meats for their accommodation and
use made by the War Office authori-
ties, Hardly anything, indeed, that
was done was done to suit the taste
of the aggregation. It was intended
that the officers and. men should oc-
cupy separate quarters, and this was
objected to and a change made. It
was part of the programme that the
infantry of the contingent should
line part of the route, where they
would see the great procession.instead
of being part of the procession and
being seen; and this, too, was a cause
of displeasure. Then the-. mounted
men were to act as a guard' for the
colonial premiers, whicla spine might
think it very fitting, arrangement, and
they were to be under command of
Lieut-Ool. Turner, V. C., who did
such creditable work in the Belfast
fight, which others again might deem
to be both appropriate and an honor.
But neither arrangement suited, and
there was talk ot the contingent re-
fusing to parade. Indeed, so general
has been the dissatisfaction that the
lot is coming home in a huff. They
will have an eight-day. sea voyage,
which may reduce the swelling of
their heads. If it does not, What they
discover of the thoughts of the Cana -
tan people when they get home will
surely have the desired effect. The
country is not particularly proud of
the contingent or of, the manner ha
-which. its units wete selected. The
presence in it of some tried and good
officers and men does not save it from
reproach. The idea in sending it was
that it would represent Canada in
counection with the coronatiors cere-
monies in the way which those who
had charge of the arrangements
thought best. If the arrangements
did not please the men when they
fouled out what they were, there
should have been sense enough among. t
them eoxecognize that they were but
part of' it great show and to have
quietly aceepted what was intended
for and was a compliment. -Montreal
