-The-goalies-were-HOT
Everyone knows that when a goaltender is
hot during the National Hockey League
(NHL),playoffs anything can happen. In the
opening round of the playoffs last week,
Mike . Luit of the St. Louis Blues and
Montreal's Steve . Penney were prime:
examples. of how goaltending can turn a
series around.
Last week Rod Report on Sports went 6-2
in opening round playoff predictions.
Divisional final predictions will be made,at
the end of this column.... - ...• _
They were throwin' pennies!
Steve Penney the unknown goaltepdey
called up front the Nova Scotia Voyageurs is
quickly making a name for himself in the
Montreal' Canadiens net. I'm sure Boston
Bruins' fans have a few adjectives to
describe Penney but few .of them are.
printable. Ironically, in a fit of rage, the
Bruins' supporters began throwing pennies
at young Penney in game two at Boston.
Following Saturday night's 5 -0 -Tasting
and three games to nothing sweep of the
lunch -bucket Bruins, most of the Canadiens'
players were probably walking around on
cloud nine. They deserved to be in utopia.
Montreal shut clown every aspect of
Boston's garde. They were one step ahead of
the Bruins in the corners checked them like
Boston had checked the rest of the league all
season.
In my opinion the series was won in the
opening game. Remember Rick Middleton's
breakaway early in the first period? He
raced in alone, and drilled the shot, over the
net and into the crowd. Penney got a break.
After that point Penney made his own
breaks and Boston played frustrated for the
remainder ...of the.. series... Had Middleton
scored -on that breakaway, what would that
have done for the Bruins and for Penney's
confidence? We'll never know.
Liut leads Blues.
When goaltender Mike Luit is hot, nine
times out of ten, the St. Louis Blues will win.
Liut was sizzling in the Blues' net as SL
Louis eliminated Detroit from the playoffs,
winning the series three games to one,
Luit, perhaps one of the most underrated
goalies since being blown out by the
Russians a few years ago, faced eighty shots
in last two games of the series and only
allowed five goals. The 6' 2" goaltender was
definitely a factor in the series.
The St. Louis win did not come easily. Two
• of the games went into overtime, with last
Saturday's being decided in double
overtime. ' To all . the people who picked
Detroit over St. - Louis (namely Jim
Fitzgerald), I say better luck next time,
maybe Detroit can do ix next.fear! _:
Nords trim Sabres
As predicted the Quebec Nordiques,'
registered a big upset by blanking the
Buffalo Sabres three games to nothing.
The Quebec Nordiques pulled a major
upset and eliminated the Sabres, a team
many thought would be the dark horse to
win the Stanley Cup.
Ironically, the Nordiques beat the Sabres
with three ex -Buffalo players in the line-up.
Tony McKegney, Andre Savard and Jean -
Francois were players Scotty Bowman felt
didn't. fit into Buffalo's plans. They
definitely fit into the Nordiques' plans and
now Buffalo is watching from the sidelines.
Islanders over Rangers
It took an overtime goal by Ken Morrow
before the defending Stanley Cup New York
Islanders coup defeat the New York
Rangers in the fifth and deciding game.
This may just be the hurdle the Islanders
had to get over... .._. — -
Washington blanks Flyers
The excellent defense of the Captials kept
the Flyers frustrated as they only scored
five goals in the three game series. For the
first time in their 10 -year history, the
'Captials „moved . past the first round. The
days when Washington was laughed at are
over.
Minnesota stops Chicago
For the first time in three years, Chicago
failed to eliminate Minnesota. This year,
,,,However, circumstances were different.
Chicago isn't the team of old. I was
surprised they put up such a • battle. I
expected a three game sweep by the Stars.
Flames beat Canucks
Even without Kent Nilsson the Flames
proved they "can score goals. In my. view
both teams in this series were poor.
Round 2 predictions
Norris Division
Best of seven series
St. Louis at Minnesota
• Most people expected St. Louis to be on the
golf course by this time. Based on their
regular season record, Minnesota is a team
that. deserves to be here, although their
performance against Chicago wasn't up -to
par. If St: Louis goaltender Mike Liut can
` keep up his heroics in the nets this series
cuold be a dandy. Minnesota has more depth
and player for player have more talent than .
St. Louis.
Series winner - Minnesota
Smythe Division
Calgary at Edmonton
Edmonton's cake walk to the Stanley Cup
couldn't be more evident than with this
match -up. Calgary may. show shades of
making this a good series but look for this
series to be over in a maximum of five
games. ,; .
Series winner - Oilers
Patrick Division
Washington at New York
This series should feature some of the best
playoff hockey. Both teams are solid
defensively and goaltending will decide it.
Series winner- Islanders
Adams'Division
Montreal at Quebec
The battle of the Province of Quebec
should be nothing short of war. Quebec
should defeat Montreal. Since Buffalo and
Montreal's style are similar, I see no reason
why Quebec cannot eliminate them based on
how they shutdown the Sabres. Home ice
will be a visible advantage in this series.
Series winner - Quebec
