ONTARIO DIVISION Money raised by the Huron Unit is sent to the Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. This year the Ontario Division needs to raise $13.2 million across the province to meet its ongoing commitments in cancer research, patient services and education., Terry Roberts, Ontario Division Volunteer Campaign Chairman, says, "Without the generous support of the Canadian public, our support of cancer research would not be possible. Nor would the Society be able to continue its programs for 1984 of public education and cancer patient services." The money raised during the Society's annual April campaign will fluid existing research programs as well as the Society's on-going education and patient services programs.: The latter two; :programs- - represent 14 and 16 per cent of the Society's income respectively, leaving just nine per cent for administration and fund raising costs. The Society's 1984 theme, "Cancer Can Be Beaten!" reflects the belief that a cure will be found for this disease. "Due to the support received in past fund raising efforts, we are making headway in the fight to beat cancer. There are many types of cancer for which we have made tremendous advances in treatment," Mr. Roberts said, "but we have a long road ahead." Terry Fox funds committed to research An estimated $26.2 million of the $28.6 million total raised by Terry Fox's "Marathon of Hope" Run and the 1981 and 1982 Terry Fox Runs have been committed to the funding of cancer research programs by the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the research wing of the Canadian Cancer Society. In response to the specific wishes of Terry Fox himself, all funds being raised in his name are being directed to the- National CancerInstitute. The primary consideration when making grants for the "Marathon of Hope" Research Programs is the emphasis on innovation and excellence on the part of • the research team. None of the funds being raised in Terry's name are being directed to support the Canadian Cancer Society's programs of Public Education and Service to Patients. The following are the cancer research programs to which the estimated $26.2 million dollars has been committed. 1) SPECIAL INITIATIVES PROGRAM— The National Cancer Institute has received more than 30 applications for Special Initiatives grants, and _to . date have allocated $1 million over five years to each of five studies being undertaken in Halifax, Kingston, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver. 2) THE TERRY • FOX TRAINING CENTRE ESTABLISHMENT GRANTS-- Under RANTS=Under the Terry . Fox Training Centre Establishment grants, five groups have been awarded up to $1 million each over a period of five years. These grants will bring groups of professors and trainees together in research training programs whereby MDs and PhDs will be trained to co-operate in the solution of each group's scientific problems.
