numals are honored for extraordinary intelligence
TORONTO - An Irish Setter in
Mississauga, an Australian Blue Merle
Sheepdog in Kenora, and a cat named Angel
in Noonan, New Brunswick, have been
honored for their extraordinary intelligence
in helping to save human lives. They have
been named as this year's new members of
the Purina Animal Hall of Fame in presen-
tations made at the Canadian National
Sportsmen's Show.
It was the 16th presentation of the annual
awards in recognition of the way animals,
through courage and intelligence, have
helped people. This year's citations bring
the ranks of Purina Animal Hall of Fame
members to 49 — including 35 dogs, 13 cats
and one hors.
This year's inductees into the Purina
Animal Hall of Fame distinguished
themselves through the following deeds:
BRANDY, an Irish Setter owned by Mr.
and Mrs. Peter White of Mississauga, saved
the family by hurling herself frantically at
the bedroom door to waken them after fire
had broken out in the kitchen. Attending
firemen said Brandy's warning had saved
the occupants' lives.
MURPH, an Australian Blue Merle Sheep-
dog owned by Mr. and Mrs. Brad Diehl of
Kenora, saved several lives by arousing her
owners after fire broke out in a 12 -
apartment block in Kenora. The Diehls were
able to alert other tenants in time to escape.
The building was completely destroyed.
ANGEL, a tabby cat owned by Mr. and
Mrs. John Fila of Noonan, New Brunswick,
awakened her owners in time to make a
miraculous last-minute escape from their
blazing home near Fredericton. The house
was completely gutted.
Ralston Purina Canada Inc. emphasizes
that the animals honored are only represen-
tative of the hundreds of instances
throughout the year where animals have
helped people in times of danger. The selec-
tion is always difficult, for there are so
many cases worthy of recognition.
Over the years pets have been honored for

the rescue of people caught in many unusual
and dangerous situations — a farmer at-
tacked by a raging bull; a child by a huge
bear; a man attacked by a cougar; a man
injured and trapped by an overturned trac-
tor; several people caught in ice -strewn
rivers and other water rescues and near
drownings; a woman locked hi a walk-in
freezer.
Dogs have tracked people lost in dense
forests and blizzards; one pulled a child off
a busy highway. They have helped capture
muggers and purse snatchers and foiled
break-ins. A seeing eye dog pushed his blind
owner off -he road and bore the brunt of be-
ing hit by a truck himself.
These are often unique situations — fire,
however, continues to be the major life
threatening hazard in which pets save peo-
ple.
