At least two complaints have been
reported from Clinton residents after three
boys, pretending to be Scouts, attempted to
solicit funds for the Ice Capades.
In scenes reminiscent of the old pioneer
days before good roads andd pavement
became pavement, gravel roads in Clinton
area townships look more like swamps in
places than roads. And the cold weather is to
blame.

There was some good news for Stanley
Township taxpayers this week as an
auditor's statement revealed at the
township's regular March meeting showed
there was a.$10,500 surplus left over from
1973. The 1974 mil rate won't be drawn up.
until May, so council has no firm idea on
how the surplus will affect the mill rate.

The majority of us who are busy with our
own affairs give litle heed, perhaps, •to the
often hard and disagreeable work which is
performed by men for the sole purpose of
making it comfortable and convenient for
the rest of us.
This was brought home to us recently by
the break in the water main on Albert Street
during a very cold spell of -weather:-T'lhe-
Hydro men had to dig down into the frozen
earth to find this leak and then handle wet
' and muddy tools while righting the trouble,
spending hours in the icy blasts, doing a dir-
ty disagreeable job, but it had to be done if
the citizens of this part of the town were to
be supplied. with pure water for household
use.
These men, whose labor means so much to
the 'comfort and happiness of the' homes of
the people, should be held in high regard.

Mr. Percy Town is coming from
Woodstock to take the position of cutter with
Tozer & Brown, to fill the vacancy caused by
the removal of Mr. Belcher. Mr Town comes
well . recommended having had several
years experience in the cities with well
known firms.
Mr. Gudmundson, the popular manager of
the Clinton Business College, was • in
Goderich on Saturday, "looking after the
College there." The fact that the College in
Goderich and i in charge of by a most char-
ming young lady may have no bearing on his
visit, but it looks significant.

For burns and scalds nothing is more
soothing than the white of an egg, which
may be poured over the wound. Is softer as a
varnish for a burn than collodion, and being
always at hand can be applied immediately.
It is also more cooling than the sweet oil and
cotton which was formerly supposed to be
the surest application to allay the smarting
pain. It is the contact with the air which
gives the extreme discomfort experienced
from the ordinary accident of this kind, and
anything that excludes the air and prevents
inflammation is the thing to be at once ap-
plied.
Harry Beacom has hung ont a new sign in
front of his shop in the town hall.
Mrs. Morley has assumed possession of
the Grand Union Hotel and will carry it on
for the accommodation of the public, and in
a manner that will conduce to comfort and
conviience.
