Self confidence, self control and self
defense. The Goderich Township Karate
Club showed all, these things ia a
competition held last weekend in Hamilton.
Under the direction of Instructor Ron
Tyndall, 12 members of the 30 -member club
competed and brought home a first, second
and third, two fourths and a fifth -place
finish. The competition involved 20 clubs
from both Ontario and the United States.
Mr. Tyndall said there were between 60 and
70 participants in every division.
Don McPhee had the best showing for the
Goderich Township club as he captured a
first -in kuda (-white-belt division) and a fifth
traditional uniforms. The board of black
belts will also be present The recipient of
the black bens first awarded a short sword
from his host club members, which is
presented by a girl dressed up in a full
Japanese costume. That costumed girl is
decided by the highest belt classification.
Each of the seven or eight black belt
holders are then served a small glass of
Saki, a potent Oriental drink composed of 17
per cent alcohol. After each of the black belt
members has snapped back their Saki, the
spot light is turned to the person who is
expected to receive the black belt. A large

Possible black belt recipient

approximately six years with the Town of
Goderich and Goderich Township Karate
clubs and will be going for the coveted black
belt on March 10 in London. Chris, now a
resident of London, wilt have to perform his,
skills in front .ofseven or eight black belt

Mr. Tyndall said the black' belt-peremony
