Maids are gracious assistants
Is there a girl anywhere who isn't flat-
tered when asked to serve as a bridesmaid?
Even as a satellite to the bride beautiful, it's
a'romantic, exciting role to play — and if
nothing else, a good•reason4orbuying afan--

B.eyond addingtolor and background to
the nuptial rites and dancing at the recep=
tion, the perfect bridesmaid has important
duties to perform prior to, and during, the
wedding.
For example, as soon as you accept the
chance to attend the bride, decide with her
about .your -dress_ and arrange for it to be
ordered. It's a gracious gesture, too, to offer
your help in addressing the envelopes, in
shopping and attending to small details.
You'll be expected to take part in pre -
wedding -social functions and attend a
shower or two. And while the maid or
matron of honor takes the major respon-
sibility for assisting the bride on the wed-
ding day, you and the other bridesmaids
should be dressed at least an hour before the
ceremony, and on hand to -relieve them of
unnecessary details.
Of all the attendants, the job of chief assis-
tant falls to the maid of honor. She has many
a duty-, andmay.delegate several of these to
any of the brride 3Sls_, So be ready to help
out as needed to the fallowing ways ...

ing, packing; help bride into her going away
clothes and assist in carefully putting away
her wedding gown; see that the an-
nouncements are mailed.
Maid of honor's duty list:
Attend pre -wedding parties; help address
invitations and announcements; entertain
bride and groom if possible; assist bride
with travel clothes and luggage.
Help to direct bridesmaids, being sure
they are aware of fitting appointments,
rehearsal obligations, their special duties.

Bridesmaids speak out
It pays to take a lesson from the mistakes
of others. Based on this theory, the most
common complaints of past bridesmaids
have been compiled by Brides magazine,
which also suggests how this year's brides
can help smooth them out.
• What they wore: Perhaps the most fre-
quent complaint is that the bridesmaids
didn't like the dresses the bride chose for
them. They were the wrong color, the wrong
style, were too expensive, or couldn't be
worn again.
While it's hard for the bride to please
everyone, you can make the effort by trying
this approach. At first, take only your maid
of honor shopping with you and narrow
down the almost limitless choice to three
styles '-or-so: Be -sure -to -choose styles_that,_
Wilt flatter the attendants' varying figures. •
Full skirts and blouson tops, for example,
look good on most figures.
You might try to include a smart two-
piece or shorter style your attendants would
be able to wear again. Once you've made
your preliminary selection, you're ready to
schedule a time when the rest of the maids
can come into the bridal shop to vote on the
final choices-
• How much- they spent. Costs can add up
when you consider that it's usual for atten-
dants to pay for their own outfits, including
shoes, accessories and perhaps an extra
dress for the rehearsal party; wedding and
shower gifts; and transportation, lodging
and meals if they are coming from out of
town. To help them out, see if friends and
relatives could put your maids up, let them
select their own shoes and provide some
meals.
• What their duties were. The problem
was.that-no o_ne_rgal.explained what the at-
tendants were expected to RIO. Asa result; "
many a bridesmaid was even more nervous
than the bride when she walked down the ai-
sle. Be sure to brief your bridesmaids
