Every woman wants to be beautiful and on
her wedding day she is.
It is an emotional day, likely the most
memorable of her life. Excitement is high
butreaches its peak: early, during her
dramatic entrance to the marriage ceremony
resplendent in a .flowing gown.._ _ ....... _ ....
The gown is the focal point of the day and
sets the tone for the wedding, whether
formal or informal. Wedding boutiques
agree it should be selected at least six
months in advance.
There is a return to the old fashioned,
traditional soft wedding, like something you
might see in pictures of your grandmother's ,
wedding.
Although the bouffant, Scarlett O'Hara
skirts are still around, on the whole skirts are
not as full as in former years. They are not
straight but flare slightly so they flow
gracefully. There is a lot of detailing on the
bodice, plenty of lace, embroidery, pleating
and seed pearls, and necklines are mostly
high, often frilled or flounced.
Sleeves are emphasized this year. They're
big and flowing with lots of decoration and
long embroidered cuffs at the wrist.
Classic said the split sleeve is also
popular. It features a straight sleeve topped
by a sheer, bouffant one, split from shoulder
to cuff, with lace edging the split and
decorating the inner sleeve. Usually with
this sleeve you would have a plain skirt. It
wouldn't go with a bouffant one.
The natural waistline has returned. There
are hardly any high, Empire waistlines in
most gown designs.
Gowns in candlelight and ivory, shades
which many women find more flattering, are
still in the minority, most gowns are
overwhelmingly white.
Fabrics are soft, opaque, of the type which
appear to float with the slightest movement,
like chiffons, silk organza, lace and silk
taffeta. Princess Diana swept this all in. It
cane from the royal wedding; ills roariairce
of a princess marrying a prince, and swept a
romantic look in.
Hats are popular this year either with
traditional , veiling or Russian (fishnet)
veiling. Veiling gives the hat a little more
dash. A waist llength veil is usually attached.
at the back of the hat. Classic does not
recommend a longer veil with this type of
headpiece.
If not a . hat, then a small cap like
headpiece is created. Veils vary from
mantilla length, down past the shoulders, to
long cathedral length which seems to go on
forever.
Seventy-five per cent of brides want a
train. The detachable train is popular again,

she added. It hooks onto the waist and is
removed following the ceremony. Trains are
inappropriate for garden weddings or a
small church, she said, and are most
impressive 'in -'a large church. Princess -Diana-
proved that.
Singe tie bridal gown sets the tune for the
wedding, it is the first selected. Then come
the bridesmaids and ushers and mothers of
the bride and groom. The bride selects the
styles and colours; colours of ushers'
tuxedos, if worn, and the mother's dresses,
must co-ordinate with the colours worn by
io
the bridesmaids, bearing in mind not just
the church tableau, but also the wedding
pictures. It looks so pretty when dresses are
all one length.
The bride will likely have. to try on many
_ gowns before- she finds the one that, makes
tier the most beautifal. For -that '-reasor she _
should have the dress picked out at least six
months ahead of time. Once the dress is
selected and ordered, it takes about eight
weeks to arrive in the store; then it must be
Fitted.
