Bears over Ironmen?
The Canadian Olympic hockey team have
nothing to be ashamed of following their
fourth -place finish at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
A bronze medal would have been terrific but
fourth place will do just fine for a team that
wasn't expected to make the medal round.
While the team sparkled defensively
throughout the tournament, a lack of offense
destroyed them in the medal round. Team
Canada failed to score a goal in their final
three games. As the old saying goes, "You
gotta score goals -to win games."

round games..
I thought if Canada would defeat any. of
the top teams, it would have been Sweden.
.. Statistics indicate they should have defeated
them. In comparing Canada vs. Russia' and
Sweden vs. Russia, the-difference..is. very
visible. Canada lost only 4-0 to the gold-
medal Soviets, while• the Swedes were
slammed 10-1. Conceivably, Canada should
have handled Sweden.
Canada appeared nervous throughout the
Sweden contest. The pressure of winning the
bronze medal weighed heavily on their
shoulders. Canada was off their game. and
didn't play as they had in • the Czech and
Soviet games.

Bears close to clinching series
The Port Elgin Bears have moved a step
closer to moving into the Central Junior C
final against the Wingham Ironmen.
Last Friday, the Bears outscored the
Kincardine Kinucks 7-5, to take a three
games to one strangle -hold in the semi-final
series.
In the other series, Wingham Ironmen
erased the Hanover Barons in four straight
games.
According the Bears' Coach Jim Tom-
bros, general overall hustle anct, deter-
mination is the key to his team's success
—against .°Kincardine.

Port Elgin went into the series with only
four defensemen and are currently getting a
110 per cent effort out of rearguards Jim
Binns, Dave Kuhl and Grant LeMonte.
Tombros said that the extra effort put forth
by his club's forwards is helping the short-
staffed defensive corps. It hasbeen-reported--
that Todd Root is playing -super hockey in
the Port Elgin nets.
If Port Elgin wins at home tonight (Feb.
22), it will be curtains for the defending
league -champion Kinucks. Tombrossaid

the Kinucks are pressured in their own e
that they will cough up the puck.
• Wingham on a roll?
In the other series, Wingham received
some excellent goaltending from Rob
Schistad in defeating Hanover in three close
games and one blow out. Wingham was
paced by league -leading scorer . Troy
Pocaluyko and Captain Kevin Coultes, who
-both held hot hands in the series.
Tombros. feels that if his team advances to
the final against the. Ironmen, the key to
beating them will be to shutdown their big'
line. Ile said that his team will play a "bump
and go" style of play against -them.
• Port Elgin plans to throw four lines at the
Ironmen. The fourth line recently came
together and is. made up of Mike Chennette
centering Gary Tucker and Chris Bell.
If Port Flgin Knocks off the Kinucks, look
for an excellent final series. I'm predicting
the Bears over the Ironmen in seven.

Cindy Connelly and •Sandi Fremlin, both

been excellent. .
Sixty students from Goderich, Seaforth
and the Vanastra area began ' the 10 -week
program on .Jan. 9. It is hoped an Exeter
group will be enrolled in the spring
program. Esso Imperial Oil Limited has
provided the seed money to cover the
program development cost.
Both' instructors have been employed at
the centre for three years.

said of the program. "We're very pleased
with the response we've had."
"Quite a few parents are involved and
that's half the battle won," she added.
Cindy and. Sandi said they first heard of
the program, last October when an Exeter
lady expressed interest in Vanastra holding
it. In November they attended an Esso Swim
Canada Instructors' course in London. The
course was eight hours long and, provided
them with information concerning proper
strokes and teaching techniques.
.Following the second Esso Swim Canada
program in the' spring, a Vanastra swim
team may be started.
The program consists of 10 weeks of one
hour. in -pool instruction. The students begin
in an introductory level and; participate in
three test items. A 15 -metre freestyle,
demonstrating proper stroke- technique; a
shallowfront dive from pool deck followed
by a.least two freestyle strokes and an open
grab turn, preceded and succeeded by at
least two freestyle strokes are the in-
troductory tests involved. Upon completion
of this level, the student is awarded a par-
swim a 15 -metre backstroke demonstrating
proper technique, demonstrating a proper .
backstroke start off the -wall -succeeded -by -at
least two backstrokes, demonstrate a
shallow front dive from a starting block •
followed by at least two freestyle strokes
and demonstrate a dolphin kick over a
distance of 10.metres.
In the turns category, each student must
demonstrate an open backstroke turn
preceded and succeeded by at least two
backstrokes. They must also demonstrate a
freestyle flip turn preceded •and succeeded
by at least two freestyle strokes.
For endurance training they are asked to
swim 50 -metres free style with no time limit
and demonstrate a proper use of kick
boards..
The challenge part of the bronze level
consists of starting from a shallow dive off a
starting block swim and 25 -metres freestyle
in a specified time or less.
"Usually the lesson starts off with
stretchingand endurance skills and then we
try a new skill," Cindy said. "We evaluate
each student on a weekly basis. Most
students had heard of the new strokes but
didn't know how to perform them."
Achievement standards have . been
established to allow a minimum of .85 per
cent of all participants to complete the gold
level. Assessment techniques have been
designed to permit candidates to progress at
their own rate.
The ultimate goal for the swimmers in this
program is to achieve the award of merit
The student has to swim the 100 -metre (four

Kelly McBeth,, 11, of Goderich is the most
-advanced swimmer in the program -thus far.
Instructors said that the youngster has
almost completed the 'bronze level at this
stage. Goderich has 27 swimmers enrolled
in junior and senior divisions of the
program. Seaforth has 18 entered, while
Vanastra and area has 15 swimmers in-

Diane Durnin, the recreation director at
the Vanastra Community Centre, said that
the recreation directors in Seaforth and
Goderich deserve a lot of credit for getting
youths involved in the program.
Both instructors discussed the possibility
of year-round competitive swimming in
Vanastra. "It's something that is possible in
the future," Sandi said.
