The gold medal trail
Surprise, surprise! Team Canada is un-
defeated in the Olympics at Sarajevo,
Yugoslavia. How many people thought the
team would come even close to qualifying
for the medal round?
I'II admit, I am rather surprised that the
team is 4-0 at this point. A forewarning is
warranted, however, the competition is
coming!
Team Canada played below average
exhibition hockey games against the United
States prior to the Winter Olympics. Then
something happened. The controversy
created when the United States demanded
that-Cariada rrot be allowed to use "pro
'playerii":iii-Ourliffe7-4---S-parltectouttroops..
It was ironic that Team Canada knocked
off the crying Americans 4-2 in the opening
game. In my opinion that was Canada's
biggest test of the Olympics thus far.
Ironically, the American press is trying to
-take Team Canada under its—wing—by--
comparing them to the "U.S. miracle team
of 1980." Since the U.S. hockey team has
been eliminated from the medal round and
the country's only bright spot has been a
gold medal in skiing, the U.S. media is
crying for a winning team. They actually
asked Canadian Coach Dave King "how it
felt to be a part of North America's team."
How quickly the Americans forget that it
was they who stabbed us in the back about
the eligibility of "pro players" in these same
Olympics! They sure were quick to jump on
the band wagon of a winning team.
No teityet
Let's face it, the opponents Canada has
defeated to this point were not high-calibre
teams. The Austrians and Norway are
winless; Finland has a 2-2 record and the
United States are below .500.
The true test comes when they face the
Czechs, the Soviets and Sweden in their
remaining games. These games will
separate the men from the boys.
Canada has the ability to beat Sweden but
it may take a miracle to beat the Czechs and
Soviets.

How embarassing!
Anyone who has watched the Olympic
hockey games on television knows that the
quality of the officiating is bad. During last
Saturday's Canada -Finland game, the
referee blew down a play after a Canadian
slapshot bounced oft the glass. The offical

surface! Instead of dropping the puck from
Where the puck was shot, the referee moved
it to centre ice.
During the Canada -Norway game, West
German Referee Josef Kompalla pulled an
unbelievable move when he- tossed—a.....
linesman out of the faceoff circle.
Apparently linesman Mateuz Cemazar of
Yugoslavia (the host country of the
Olympics) was bouncing the pucks on
faceoffs and throwing it down before both
men were ready. Talk about throwihg egg
on someone's face!
