with a very painful accident last week.
While fixing a wire fence the crow-
bar with which he was working slipped
the wire striking him in the face and
neck, giving him a stunning blew
rendering him unconscious for some
time. He was unable to get around
for several days.

The news of the declaration of peace
te South Africa on Monday morning

enthusiasm by the citizens. Flags
were hoisted, the first being raised

joyful music,
The regular monthly meeting of the
Ladies Aid. Society afthe Main S.
Methodist church will be held at the
home of Mrs. Fowell this (Thursday)
afternoon. A cordial invitation is ex-
tended not only to the nembers of the
society but to all ladies of the emigre-
gation, to carae and speed a pleasant
time,

service of Thanksgiving for Peace in
South Africa, will be held in Trivitt
Meraorial church, at 11 o'clock. The
Rev. J. W. Ten Eyck will preach a
sermon appropriate to the occasion,
At the evening service, Mr. Ten Eyck
will preach upon the subject of Con-
donation.
A. quiet wedding took place in Lon-
don on Wednesday, June 41,11, when
Miss Grace Bowlby, of London, was
milted in marriage to Andrew Oke,
son of Mr. and. Mrs. Hugh Oke, of this
village. Mr. and Mrs, Oke spent a
short time in town before leaving for
their home in Seaforth, where Mr.
-Oke is engaged in the harness busi-
ness,
The first death sentence pronounced
upon a prisoner in the new court,
house, Toronto, was passed on Mon-
day, upon Fred Lee Rice, the convict-
ed bank robber and murderer of con-
stable Boyd of Toronto, who • was
shot a year ago while Rice, Jones and
Routledge sought to escape from a
nab in which they were being driyen
to jail. He is sentenced to be hanged
on July 18th.
Hon. G. W. Ross will revise his de-
cision to ga to the coronation if the
recounts go against him. If he is
shorn of his scant majority it means
resignation or an appeal to the Prov-
ince, and the latter course well-inform-
ed Liberals state will be pursued. .The
Telegrain (Independent) of June 3,
says that dissolution of the Legisla-
ture and a second appeal to the Prov-
ince within a inonth is the programme
which to -day engages the earnest at-
tention of the. Ross Gavernment.
Whether or not these desperate means
shall be adopted depends largely upon
the results of the recounts.

BROKE HIS LEG—Dr. vvin. Sweet,
of Exeter, received a letter last week
from his brother in Morden, Man.,
stating that his father,Richard Sweet,
had met with a very sad accident in
the fracturing of his right leg and. dis-
locating of the hip, by falling on the
sidewalk. He is at present in the
Morden Hospital and but little hopes
are entertained. that he will ever
have the use of the injured meraber,as
Mr. Sweet is now in his 74th year.
Tne accident is a serious one. Mr,
Sweet formerly lived on the 8rd con.,
Stephen, and left for Manitoba about
25 years ago. His many friends in
this locality will regret :to hear of his
misfortune,

Mr, and. Mrs. Thomas Willis, Main
street, on Tuesday, at 7 a. m., when
their youngest daughter, Miss Ida,was
united in 'marriage to Mr. Chas. Percy
Luxton, of South Bend, Indiana, The
ceremony was performed by the Rev,
O. W. trown B. A, B. D, pastor of
James street kethodist hutch, in the
presence of only the immediate rela-
tiveof the contracting parties. The
bride was attired in her travelling cos-
tume of castor cloth with • a bodice of
old rose silk with chiffon and !pearl
tritritnings and wearing a large black,
picture hat. The bridal party left
imniediately after the ceremony,for
their new home in South Bend, visit-
ing relatives in 1Ka1amazoo, en -route.
The groom is an old Exeter boy, and
is a eon of the late Richard Luxton,
while the bride has always been a, resia
dent of this locality, The •best wishes
of many friends a the happy couple
will follow them to their new home
for a happy and prosperous voyage
down the stream of life.

FARMERS' Excurtsrom— The South
Huron Farmers' Institute has com-
pleted the arrangements for running a
big excursion to the Mcidel Farm, at
Guelph,an Friday, June 20th. A stop
over privilege has been secured, which
makes the tickets good for the follow-
ingday should any wish to remain
over. A special train has been ar-
ranged for from Centralia to Clinton
on the morning of the excursion, to
connect with t,he exeursion train at
Clinton, while special trains will re-
turn the excursionists to Centralia on
the south and Belgrave on the north
the same night: This will give all
those going a good long day in_ Guelph.
These Excursions are becoming more
popular each year, and no doubt the
excursion this year will be more large-
ly patronized iihaft *um before. For

newly married couple all sat down to
a sumptuous wedding dinner, after
which tha evening. was spent in social'
games, music, etc. The presents to
the bride were both, numerous and
costly,testifying to the esteem in which
the young couple are held. Mr. and
Mrs. Miners are well known here, and

friends in wishing them along, happy
and prosperous life. They. take up
their residence on the corner of Huron
and William streets.
4-'0ELEnn,A.Trox AND HALF HOLIDAY.
—At a, public meeting held in the town
li all -on Monday night last it was de-
cided to hold a celebration on account
of peace' being proclainaed in South
Africa. After a number of speeches
gad been made it was decided to pro-
claim Friday afternoon as a half holi-
day. A comnaittee was then appoint-
ed with power to act, and are as

Levett, C. Ff. Sanders, L. T1, Dickson,
Seuior, Alf WaltersaRichard Davis.
A program has been arranged and
will consist of a parade in whieh the
council, societies -of the town, school
children and members of No. frl corn -
any, 33rd regimett, headed by the
Exeter Brass Band will march. The
procession will leavel the school
grounds at 2 o'olock sharp on Friday
afternoon next, marching up Mathew
street to Station Road, then to Wil-
liam street,south on William. to Huron
street, eaSt on Huron to Main street
then up Main to the school ground
where there will be addresses by Mr.
Harry Elber, M. P. P., Oreclaton, and
Mr. M. Y. McLean, Seaforth. The
ministers and others of the village will
also give shorb addresses, interspersed
by patriotic songs by the school child-
ren, It is earnestly requested by the ,
committee that everyone in the village
will help make the celebration a suc-
cess by clecoratinv their dwellings ata
forming part of the procession making
the event one long to be remembered
in commemoration of a very satisfac-
tory outcome of that very memorable
struggle or Anglo Saxon supremacy.
That the war which has for so many
months been waged between Great
Britain and South Africa has at last
• terminated by the enemy laying down
arms. Immediately following the
program a base ball match will be
played on the recreation grounds be-
tween the "Buffers" and the "Duffers'
after which there will be a huge bon-
fire and a grand display of fireworks,
