CLINTON
RECORDOWED 41), J
For those who still insist on braving those
minus zero tejiiperatures just to enjoy a
breath of fresh air, here are some helpful
tips to help. you keep and stay warm.
On the of major natural disasters of
the world, cold waves rank low in deaths
caused. But that news 'shouldn't exactly
make you confident enough to don Bermuda.
shorts and sun tan lotion. If you're out in
really cold temperatures, youshould worry
about frostbite.
Just a few minutes of exposure can
damage face and fingers by allowing ice
crystals to form on or under the skin; touch
cold metal and it can happen in an instant.
The clue that it's coming is a„tingling and
ruddy look, followed by a paleness and
numb feeling, not necessarily painful. EV-
perienced out -door types learn to glance fre-
quently at each other's faces. At -34 (C),
flesh can freeze in one minute, and, don't

'above freezing.
Some first aid tips 'should be followed
along with a trip to the nearest medical
facility as soon as the immediate measures
have been administered. r '
First of all, get the victim to a waren
place. A warm room, heated car or truck -
anywhere out of the cold and wind. Then wet
clothing should be replaced with dry
clothing or.severallayters-of wartn-wraps--as
soon as possible. One good possibility is to
zip the victim into a warm sleeping bag that
has been pre -heated and kept warm with a
hot water bottle, warm bricks or rocks.
If the victim is conscious, give him warm
liquids such as coffee or tea. Do not give a
frostbite victim any alcoholic drinks, that
means no hot toddies folks. This will only ag-
gravate an already serious condition. Ig-
nore folklore, do not rub the area at all. The
affected area needs to be warmed gradually
in lukewarm water.
The injured area should be covered with
soft layers of clothing, blankets, wool bat-
ting (found in some first aid kits) or
whatever is available. Finally, take the vic-
tim to the nearest medical facility as soon as
possible. The only real first aid response is to leave

to medicalcare if it's necessary.
Howarth says much of the work
TransCanada's staff does on the lines is at
meter stations which are not usually far
from a highway. But in winter conditions, a
few hundred yards can sometimes be a long
way, and his safety advice applies to anyone
outdoors. ,
"Make sure people know where you are,
and when you Igtp to be back. Know your
own physical 4fIlints, don't overstretch
____/yourself. You can get exhausted or get lost."
Howarth-doesa lot ottravelling in his job,
and says that if the weather is threatening
he checks in at a hotel and waits it out.
He said if you're travelling, schedule it so

_you're' in -your vehicle, don't walk aWdy -
from it, or you could be in trouble.
Car kits
Your car should carry flares, jumper
cables, flashlights, candles (for heat),
blankets, a first aid kit and non-perishable
food.- You should also have sand and a
shovel in your car but don't wear yourself
-out-trying-todig-out: - _ . _
If you're lost -anywhere in the cold, get
under the best shelter you can and cover up.
Cover your neck as well as your head,
because it's one of the areas where your
body will heat faster. Resist the temptation
to move around a lot because physical exer-
tion also increases heat loss.
A real danger from extreme cold is
hypothermia. This can be caused by a pro-
longed exposure to cold or an unexpected
plunge into icy water. This can result in a
dangerous lowering of the body's core
temperature.
A complicated problem, hypothermia is
said to have symptoms of violent shivering
and then 'extend to an appearance of death.
tissues resulting from exposure to extreme
cold. If you must be outside, .wear proper
clothing and do not stay out more than two
hours at a time. There should be intervening
rest periods of at least a half hour. People
with circulation problems or diabetes
should take extra care against frostbite.
"If someone falls and suffers a..back or
spine injury, do not move him unless it's
necessary to prevent further damage," says
Don Howarth, an Area Safety Co-ordinator
quickly. An easy way to warm the victim is
to apply body warmth or a hot water •bottle
wrapped in protective toweling to the heat
escape areas; the neck, armpits and groin.
If possible,. get the victim indoors and put
him in a warm bath or wrap him in an elec-
tric blanket, and leave arms and legs expos-'
ed. Don't actively warm extremities. If the
victim is conscious and the case is mild,.
give him a warm, sugared drink. Do not
give alcohol.
