The fanatic, iii tonnaturre Whlch
struck, this district last Thursday
night, played havoc with farmers'
barns in the surrounding country;
besides tearing up trees by the roots
anclSblowing down fences and out-
houses. The roofs of the barns of
James Shoebottom and J. L. Talbot,
of the 7th concession, London town-
ship, were blown of and carried some
distance.by the wind. The barn of
Shoebottorn, of the 7th con. in
course of erection, was practically
demolished.
The labor element of Wallaceburg is
worked up in regard to the importa-
tion of Belgians to work in the new
sugar factory. Joseph Marks was call-
ed to Wallaceburg last week to. orga-
nize the local labor men. Mr. Marks
said there was a great deal of indigna-
tion existing among the townsfolk.
The tows gave a bonus of $30;000 to
the sugar refinery, and strenuously
objects to the importation of alien
labor. The report was that 100 ,addi-
tional Belgians were to be brought in.
Eleven are already there.

A surgical operation of a rare kind
was performed recently on Thomas
Lunn, of Port Talbot. Mr. Lunn in
February last was thrown on a large
circular saw, cutting his leg at the up-
per third of the thigh, severing the
eat sciatic nerve and cutting away
our inches ef it. By reason of this
injury to the nerve, Mr. Lunn lost the
use of the lower part of his leg and
foot. The doctors splitthe upper seg-
ment of the nerve, turned it down,.
and made union with the lower seg-
ment, thereby bridging the part which
was cu tr away by the saw at the time
of the injury. °
High Constable Mereevether, of
Guelph, was in Drayton the other
day in connection with a butter case
and brought back a case of butter
with him. At least, it is a case of
what purports to be butter. The
case contains two rolls, and to the
re. depth of about an inch the rolls are
composed of bona -fide butter. But
Vie interior of these rolls is composed
ottold newspapers, bacon rinds, eggs
of ubpertain age, but certain odor,
hinder‘levyine, and other things too
numerous- to mention, The butter
was made by.a Marborough woman,
who made and stld se.veral lots of the

At a meeting of the Quarterly offi-

church, London, the following reso-
lution was passed "That this Quar-

its entire disapproval of the Referen-
dum of Dec. 4th, 1902, it being framed
so clearly in the interests of the liquor
sellers as to render it an insult to the
temperance people of this Province.
and we would urgently request the
cistrict meeting to petition the ap-
proaching annual conference to call
upon the friends of temperance 'with-
in the boandaries of said conference
to utterly eepudiate and ignore the
said referendum, and to seek by other
means to secure the prohibition of the

Death of Rev. Father Traher.
Rev. Hubert George Traher, the
reverend rector et St. Marys Roman
nee:hone paxish,Londell died at Mount
St. Joseph on Friday last,
Father Traher had. not been in good
health since the beginning of the year,
He suffered considerably from an af-
fection of the liver, but with his usual
zeal he contin, ued his labors until
Thursday of last week, when ib be-
came necessary to remove him to
Mount St. Joseph. He Was deeply in-
terested in the work at the new St.
Marys church, and it was only after
much persuasion that he consented to
place himself entirely under the care
of his physician:1,
The death of their esteemed pastor
will be a severe blow to the people of
St, Marys parish, His worth was
recognized by the head of the diocese,
and -he was looked upon as the one
most needed to oversee the work of
the church in the south and east end
of the city. That he should be cut
off on the eve of the opening of
the edifice is particularly sad. But
St. Marys church will eyer stand as a
monument to his untiring energy,
Rev. Father Traher was born in
England nearly fifty years ago, and
came to London when a small boy.
Father Traher was one of the first
priests ordained in St Peter's Cathe-
dral, the ceremony taking place in
July 1885. Hewes first- stationed at
Wallaceburg, as assistant, and after-
wards at St. Thotuas, as assistant, to
i,he late Father Flannery. While
there be had the oversight of the work
at Alvinston, Port Stanley and Dut-
ton. Wheii the parish of Simcoe was
established, with Port Dover as a mis-
sion, Father Traher was placed ,in
charge, and there he labored faithful-
ly. His next station was Mt. Carmel,
and it was there he was particularly
successful. A new church had been
erected there by the late Father Kelly,
and when Father Traher took charge
the mortgage amounted to $10,000. ln
less than three years Father Trailer
presented the late Bishop Walsh with
the mortgage and $100 in cash.
Father Traher was an eloquent
preacher, and Was undoubtedly one of
the -most devoted priests in the dio-
cese. He was something of a genius,
being an artist and nauscian of ability.
He had overseen the work at the new
church, and was practically the de-
signer of the altar at the edifice.
Father Trailer is suryived by his
father. who is a resident of London,
two sisters and nephews and nieces.
The funeral took place from the new
church on Monday. The late Fath sr
Traher has many friends in •this lo-
• cality who regret to hear of his demise.
