Day care representatives and parents
from Wingham, Listowel and Varastra have
begun forming a coalition of rural day care
centres to protest fyovenunent plans to cut
funding.
At the moment, the group is composed of a
number of concerned individuals, explained
Jim Barnes, chairman of the W mgham Day
Care Board. However members will be air
proaching their day care boards to ask for
official backing.
The group also plans to seek support from
other rural day care boards and from
parents through letter -writing and other
campaigns. It hopes, by coordinating the ef-
forts of these smaller centras+, to convince
the provincial government to it (east main-
tain the existing level of day care service,
and hopefully to improve it., Mr. Barnes
said.
"We are exploring ways W inform other
day care centres and find other groups to
approach on day care's behalf'."
The first steps toward foaling a coalition
came following a meeting at Wingham of a
small group of representatives from the
r ;test
Wingham, Listowel and Vanaatra day care
centres and concerned parents with Susan
Colley of the Toronto-based Ontario Coali-
tion for Better Day Care.
The meeting was organized by Winm
Deputy Reeve Patricia Batley, a member of
the day care board who has been leading
the fight against funding cuts.
While both the Li towel and Tuckeramith
Township councils have thrown their sup-
port behind their day care centres in oppos-
ingthe funding cuts, which it is predlcted
wforce the centres to close, the Wingham
council has not yet said where it stands.
Following a meeting with re resen-
tatives of the Ministry of Community and
Social Services last month, council formed
an ad hoc couunittee with members of the
day care board and councillors to explore
the situation.
Mr. Barnes, a member of that committee,
said it has met three times so far in an ef-
fort to familiarize all members with the cur-
rent situation in day care. A meeting with
ministry representatives is set for January
17.
