Bayfield Road CLINTON 482-3409 CLINTON lea, NS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1983—PAGE 13A ill power -you'll nee If you are a dieter, chances are that you renewed your dieting efforts in September after a hectic summer. You have probably lost a few pounds and are eager to keep on losing. Also you secretly are worried about the upcoming holiday season and its effects on your weight -loss plan. You don't want to ruin your efforts, but maybe don't know how to handle the problems that occur at this time off year. Maybe you are actually frightened. The following ideas may help you get through the season and emerge refreshed rather than depressed over a weight gain. Maybe, too, with these ideas, some hard work and motivation, you may even lose a few pounds. Give it a mighty try by beginning now. Gear up psychologically for the battle. Visualize yourself as a slimmer person in the- new year. Keep that image in your head at all times. Try to maintain some kind of schedule. This time of year is devestating to a routine. Do your best to eat at regular times so you don't starve one minute and gorge yourself the next. Plan ahead, no matter what the event. If you are going to a cocktail party, don't go on an empty stomach. Eat a light protein snack about 20 minutes before you leave your house. This will take the edge off your ap- t, t stay trim with diet plan petite by the time you arrive. If you are going to a dinner party in a private home, you may find it helpful to prepare yourself to the inevitable remarks, "Go ahead and have a little more, You can go on your diet tomorrow." Sometimes your friends are your worst enemies. Be polite but firm in refusing food you don't care to eat. Holiday shopping can drive you to the point of exhaustion. Try to pace yourself. Chances are you will eat more when you are tired. The reason for this phenomenon is that you have less resistance to temptation. In addition, you are less likely to prepare a wholesome meal and will snack on the first thing available in the refrigerator or the cupboard. Too much self-denial can make you feel like a martyr. Don't feel sorry for yourself about all the temptations you are resisting. If you can't overcome the temptation, or are really experiencing a craving, then have a bit of whatever it is you want. But control the amount you eat. Above all, keep in mind that it really is the taste you are craving, not the whole piece. Take a little taste and savor every morsel. You'll find this method refreshingly satisfying. If you are used to counting calories, you'll find it difficult. Don't give up the practice entirely because of time restraints. May your holiday suit you perfectly, Thanks Gord and Jean Herman Christmas decorations Achieving distinctive and beautiful effects with Christmas evergreens is easier than you may think, even if as a decorator you are greener than the materials you will be working with. For large wreaths, consider the fine, graceful, gray -green foliage of white pine, or a blackish -green fir that doesn't shed. English ivy is perfect for making flat wreaths, as are the heart -shaped green or bronze galax leaves, which are especially fine for table decorations. Wreaths, boughs or table decorations can be given an especially festive sparkle with push-button ease. The trick is accomplished with spray enamels that dry in minutes. Cranberries, textile pieces, crepe paper, cardboard, nuts, fruits, and cellophane — plus imagination — are some of the other in- gredients you can use to make your evergreen displays more dazzling. Decorating starts at Saint Nick's doorway — the fireplace. A gleaming plate glass mir- ror over it provides the.frame for sprays of holly tied with bright red ribbon, and boughs of white and silver bring tasteful beauty. If you have no fireplace, a large mirror centered over a bookcase, serving chest or long table (to hold packages or Christmas cards) will "center" your room decorations and provide a focal point — while reflecting Christmas from every view. English holly, with its glistening foliage and splendid large red berries, is a most at- tractive leaf for large wreaths outside your home. To brighten up your door either hand the usual garland, or experiment with special treatments: (1) an A -shaped figure of greens cut out of cardboard to resemble the silhouette of a Christmas tree; (2) an overhead mantle of spruce or hemlock (fine for outdoors but impractical inside the house because of their excessive shedding); or (3) a display of nuts, pine needles and fruit mounted on a panel board. To create a figure A, cut a squat pyramid in the form of a tree. To this backing, sew or wire evergreens so that the cardboard is Sweet thoughts to oll our customers who've been like friends... may you hove o merry Yule! Top it off with the addi- tion of small cones or berries — or even mistletoe. To mount a mantle of greens over the doorway, use thin lengths of wire braided together to hold the greens in their in- dividual places. When mounting it, be sure to keep a firm grip on a stepladder. A variation on such overhead decorations is an old hula -hoop, wound with greens and decorations, mounted flush with the porch ceiling. A string of colored lights gives it drama by night. To make the panel display from a board, drive nails in from the back side of it long enough to hold fruits or gourds. You can also glue nuts in position, with pine needles as a background. Again, cover the entire board with your decoration pieces. Dime -store picture -hangers ( the kind with adhesive) can then be used to attach the whole frame to the door withough injuring the finish. For simpler Christmas doorways, wire cones together in a pendant cluster, adding evergreen branches to cover the wires. Or tie three scall bells to a door frame with a bow of gayribbon and a few pine branches. Sleigh bells are ideal. For window decorations try a candle, a wreath, or a spray of evergreens, remembering though, how easily window decorations can become overdone and garish. You may like to let your child try water paints for "stained glass window" ef- fect — or try them yourself. For your Christmas table use a long tray upon which you put 10 candles of various heights, ranging in color from deep scarlet to pure white. Space sprigs of holly and some gay winter berries for a finishing touch. Let whatever table arrangements you prepare be low enough not to obscure views of faces or inhibit free conversation. And whichever way your creative bent carries you, use plenty of color and keep the effect harmonious. I(... CLOSED: Sunday, Dec. 25, Monday, December 26 and New Year's Day. This, in itself, will help remind you how well you are doing. If you plan to eat in a restaurant, plan ahead. Decide before you go that you will order something from the menu that is not swimming in gravies or sauces. Seafood or poultry are the wisest choices. When food is served, concentrate on eating slowly. Cut pieces smaller so it seems like you have more. Concentrate on enjoying the flavor. Listen to conversation intently, enjoy friends. Savor the atmosphere. It's a total experience, not just a meal. If you get upset, depressed or confused, take a walk instead of heading for the refrigerator.
