Pictured is a young girl who is thrilled with Santa's beard. (Rod Hilts photo) The Night Before Christmas It was the night before Christmas and I couldn't sleep a wink. 1 lay in my bed all snug and pretty warm, counting the stars. I was only at 29 when all of a sudden there was a bang, rumble and crash. I opened the window and threw up the sash. All I could see was a pretty pink glow. I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick and the pretty pink glow must be one of his nine reindeer named Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. I ran downstairs and looked for a place to hide, so I could see Santa Claus but he couldn't see me. I had an idea. I'd hide on the couch under the cushions. I got in my place just in time, because as soon as I pulled the last cushion, down the chimney he came with a bang and a bound. He was a jolly old man with a nose like a rose and he had cheeks like cherries and a belly like a bowl full of jelly. He started his work by filling the stockings, hung by the warm, blazing fire place. He looked around the living room. He noticed a bump on the couch. He ran over and pulled off the cushions, I jumped up and said, "Hi Santa, old boy!" Then I asked, "May I come with you and help deliver the rest of the toys to the boys and girls?" Santa exclaimed, "It would be a big help but how will you tell your parents without waking them up?" I will just write a letter that says Dear Moan and Dad I have gone with Santa Claus to deliver the rest of the presents to the good boys and girls. Please don't worry. I will be home by tomorrow. Sincerely, Richard, your son. I taped it to my mother's bedroom door Santa's hest elf Would you like to be a Christmas elf? Well I would. I would like to be a special elf, one of Santa's best. My name would be Zippitty because I would be able to "Zipp" through my work very quickly. I have a lot of jobs. Guess how many I have. Fifteen. All the rest only have five jobs. Here are some of mine. Painting, carving, cutting and glueing. This is something that really isn't a job it is sort of like giving a gift to Santa. Getting his food ready for him like cookies and milk, carrots and cake. I would also give messages such as", Love one another and take Good care of your family. Remember you don't have to have a lot of money to buy a nice gift for so- meone. A kiss or a hug can never miss the heart. I yelled out, "On Dasher, on Donner, on Dancer, on Blixin, on Comid, on Cupid, on Prancer and Vixon, and last of all but not the least Rudolph. When we were on our way I asked him how many houses we had to go to. He said, "Oh we only have about 50,000 -billion more houses." 1 have one last question, "How long will it take to go all the way around the world?" Santa Claus said, "Well exactly from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m." By now it was exactly 12:30 a.m. We headed back for my house when Santa yelled, "Oh no I forgot about Lee Lung Chong!" Who is that?" I asked. It's a girl in China who wanted a doll for Christmas. He turned the sleigh around almost instantly. The reindeer were running at the top speed. In a couple of minutes we were in China. We delivered the doll and Santa took me home. I had a lot to tell about my trip with Santa Claus. -Richard Randall, Gr 5, Huron Centennial. Mike Watt, Gr. 2, Huron Centennial Santa Claus tripped My best Christmas was when Santa Claus tripped over my steps. I woke up and said "Who is that?" I looked around the corner and I saw Santa taking a piece of bread. I put a carrot out for Ruddph but he ate it. He went out the door. I looked in my stocking and I found a candy cane. Then I put it in my room for the rest of the night. The End. Sometimes I would go into the house and see the little kids but I would be very careful because I could get caught in a box or in the wastepaper basket. Then I would run into the kitchen and see if there was any little crumbs. You see for a very small elf a crumb is filling. Next I would go in the sink and get a drink. Then I would take a bath. After that I would prac- tise my dives in the sink pool. Now I would go and jump into Santa's pocket again.
