"The people in this town should see more
than one game before they pass judgement
on the players. I think the team has more
points now than most people in Clinton
thought we would get all year"- Clinton
Mustang Head Coach Bob Zimmer, after his
team had blasted the Hanover Barons 7-3
last Sunday night.
The old question arises once more in the
sports circles of Clinton. Where are the fans
and why don't they support local teams?
The Clinton Junior C Mustangs have
averaged well below 50 fans a game this
season. Many people use the excuse that
they have no desire to support a team that
gets blown out of the rink every time they
set foot on the ice. A waste of time they say.
While that has held true for much of the
Mustangs season, it is no longer true.
Mustang President Larry Daw said a few
weeks ago that he was "very disappointed"
in the fan support the Juniors are getting.
He said some Clinton people wouldn't
support the Mustangs because there wasn't
enough local talent on the team. Daw has
stocked his roster with area players and has
only one import signed. .Now they complain
that there shouldn't be so many locals
because the team is losing too many games.
That argument doesn't hold water.
The Mustangs started the season much
like a toddler, learning to walk. They had 10
rookies in the line-up and two of them were
goaltenders. Coach Zimmer had the
unenviable task of turning these players into
a team.
Zimmer stands firmly behind the
philosophy "you have to crawl before you
walk". It was evident in their first 10 games
of the season. The team was literally
crawling - crawling for some place to hide.
Memories of the 20-2 bombing they absorbed
1ow1i
g . w
standings
was undoubtedly on the minds of these
players each time they took to the ice.
"Give us a couple of months and we should
be in pretty good shape," were the words of
Zimmer on Oct. 2, following a 5-3 exhibition
loss tp the Port Elgin Bears. His words are
becoming truth.
The team has played excellent hockey in
their last four games. Two weeks ago, the
Mustangs beat the first -place Port Elgin
Bears 3-1 and knocked off the Walkerton
Black -Hawks 6-3. Last Friday, with any
luck, the team would have beaten Kin-
cardine but came up on the short end off a 7-4
score. On Sunday, they came up with their
biggest win of the season in bombing the
Hanover Barons 7-3. This is not the same
team that began the season together.
Respectability has crept back into the
Mustang dressing room.
Remember Rome wasn't built in a day.
This team is improving and will continue to
improve. Fan support is must. As Daw says,
"During most of our games you could shoot
a cannon down each side of the rink and you
wouldn't hit anything." Let's see some fan
support for our local teams. It's up to you.
Santa and the 'Stangs
On Dec. 23, Santa Claus will be attending
the Mustangs - Wingham game and will be
hanging out candy to the kiddies.
Elementary children accompanied by an
adult will be admitted free and will receive a
candy bag. The Junior C's would like to
thank Don Middleton for his donation of a
bushel of Maclntosh apples for the event.
