The Knox United Church Women held
their annual Christmas pot -luck dinner
Wednesday, December 14 with husbands
and guests attending.
Mrs. Jack Armstrong, the president,
opened with a short address and Mr. Shut-
tleworth thanked the United Church Women
for their surprise Christmas gift.
The program, "The Christmas Story", in
music and work, was presented with Mrs.
Peter Verbeek in charge.
A candle was lit representing 'The Light
of the World' and a lovely duet was sung by
Mrs. Emerson Rodger and Mrs_ Tom Jardin
with Mrs. Marjorie McDougall as pianist.
Mrs. Jack Armstrong, Mrs. Dorothy Grange
and Mrs. Oliver Anderson lit eight candles
representing the various 'Lights of the
World'. The lights were for those without
hope, for the poor and humble, for those
forgotten, for people at war, for children, for
the afflicted and oppressed and for those
who seek. Various Christmas carols in-
terspersed the candle lighting. Mrs. Gordon
Gross played a piano solo
The last candle, the light for ourselves,
was then lit and Silent night was sung. A
reading, written by Helen Steiner Rice, 'The
Most Priceless Gift of Christmas,' was
given by Mrs. Elliott Lapp.
Mrs. Tena Empey called Mrs. Jack Arm-
strong to the front and presented her with a
life -membership pin, thanking her for her
active leadership for the past two years.
Concert
"And there was Light" was the theme of
the Knox United Interdenominational Sun-
day school concert held in the church
auditorium last Saturday evening. The
minister, Gary Shuttleworth, welcomed all
and thanked the teachers and helpers for
preparing the evening's concert. The
organist, Mrs. Gordon Gross and the
pianist, Mrs. Laura Lawrence, played
several numbers

Christmas Carols preceded the gift ex-
change, that had been arranged by Laura
Murray and Berva Watson under a
decorated table Christmas tree. There were
goodies brought m by several members
when Audrey Hackwell and Marie Coutts
made up five boxes to be given to shut-ins.
Institute Christmas concert
The Walton Women's Institute sponsored
a community Christmas concert in the hall,
on Dec. 16. Margaret Shortreed was M.C.
for the program. Blaine Marks played
several violin selections accompanied by
pianist Marjory Humphries. Ruth Axtrnann
gave an interesting reading and a piano solo
was given by Susan Carter. Step dancing
numbers were presented by Keri and Kevin
McIlwain and Marci McCall as Santa and
two elves. Pam Nolan read 'The Night
before Christmas" to the children. Mildred
Francis and Phyllis Mitchell played several
Christmas numbers with song. Brian Love
recited "The Days of Christmas" followed

Tracy Bennett did the Highland Fling. Tian
Nolan played the electric guitar accom-
panied by his mother at the piano.
A comical play was well acted by several
local people. Heather McGavin sang a solo,
accompanied at the piano by her mother.
Margaret Craig gave an amusing reading
and Marjory Humphries conducted a
roaster drill with Mike and Mark, the Nolan
twins, Tim Nolan, Blaine Marks, Chris
Stevenson and Steven Nolan taking part.
Graeme Craig performed in action and
song anh several local people put on a comic
play. Viola Kirkley gave a reading preceded
by a reading given by Brian Love.
He.en Craig read the Christmas story
along with Christmas Carols being sung by
the audience joining in. Shannon Craig
assisted holding up the Carol titles to be
sung. Helen expressed her thanks to all for
helping with the concert.
The singing of Jingle Bells brought Santa
when he treated all the children to a candy
cane.

Angels from the Realms of Glory and the
nursery class, with teachers Tammy Shut-
tleworth and Lori Millian, listened to the
Christmas story and sang. They were
Rachel Arthur, Tammy Middlecamp, Craig
Empey, Janice Marie Young, Catherine
Powell, Scott Perry, Tracy Millian and
Cheryl Ramsay.
The kindergarten class, with teachers,
Mrs. Gail Dobie, Mrs. Lynn Chamney and
Miss Angela Millian, decorated a Christmas
tree while they said verses. They were
Michael Luna, John Armstrong, Benjamin
Craig, David Campbell, Nathan Durnin,
Shannon Perry, Bradley Ramsay, and
Jason Rutledge.
The primary class, with teachers Miss
Angela Schneider and pupils Shane
Webster, Jonathon Collins, Marty
Lawrence, Laurel Campbell, Michael Bak-
ker, April Gross, Kurt Marchl, Karin
Millian, Shawn Perry, Marc Bricker, Ryan
Chaniney, Shelley Dobie, Peter Craig and
Scott Arthur, said their Christmas verses.
Grade 3 and 4 girls marched into the
church carrying old fashioned candle
lanterns and singing carols with teachers
Mrs. Brenda Powell and Miss Kim Scott.
Pupils were Donna Lynn Armstrong, Rose
Marie Young, Leslie Lawrence, Alison
Chamney, Susan Dobie, Christy Bricker,
Kerry Bakker, Jodi Webster, Janice
Webster, Cathy Nesbitt, Ruth Anne Bakker
and Annette Vincent.
The young teen class, with teacher, Mrs.
Darlene Empey, had readers and speakers,
Glynis Marie Young, Bryan Ramsay, Julie
Glenn, Sharon Ramsay, Steven Millian,
Dwight Caldwell and Sandra Deveau.
Grade 3 and 4 boys, with teachers Mrs.
Barbara Bakker and Mrs. Walter Marchl,
presented their Christmas story. The boys
are Chris Marchl, Regan Millian, Bryan
Gross, Ian Andrews, Ryan Middlecamp,
Shawn Rutledge, Tyler Craig, Andrew
Luna, Michael Schneider, Scott Arthur,
Leslie Lawrence and Marc Bricker. All sang
the song, There is a Song in the Air.
The juniors, with teachers, Mrs. Marilyn
Verbeek and Glen Webster, performed.
Readers were Karen Bakker, Kevin
Webster, Nicole Middlecamp, Elvis Vincent
and speakers were Jamie Durnin, Dean
Caldwell, Stuart Bakker, Jeff Nesbit, Lana

All children and parents went to the base-
ment where a lighted Christmas tree and
Santa Claus arrived and gave out gifts and
treats to all.
Couple's Club
The Couple's Club of Knox United church,
about 25 persons, went out carolling last
Sunday evening around the village. They
later arrived at the church where lunch was
served by Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Gross and
Mr. and Mrs. Barry Millian.

Winners at last week's euchre party were:
novelty - Tom Hallam; high lady - Mrs. Ber-
nice McClinchey; low lady - Mrs. Eppie
Lawrence; high man - Clarence Allen; and
low man - George Mason.
Winner of the Auburn and District Lions
Club lottery draw last week was Paul Cook.
Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Rodger were
guests last Saturday of their grandchildren,
Mr. and Mrs. Randy Maize at Dungannon.
Obituary
Mrs. Jean Hill (Plumsteel) Snell, a
former Auburn resident, passed away in
South Huron Hospital, Exeter on December
12 in her 75th year. She was the beloved wife
of the late Reverend Harold J. Snell, a
former minister of Knox United Church in
Auburn and Donnybrook; mother of Peter
William Snell of Exeter; sister of Mrs.
Margaret Kingston of Seattle, Washington;
and grandmother of Linda, Heather and
Russ.
She was predeceased by two sons, Rodger
and Gordon Snell and one sister, Eleanor
Plumsteel.
The funeral was held last Wednesday at
Exeter with burial taking place in Ball's
Cemetery, Auburn.

The Christmas meeting of the Auburn
Women's Institute was held in the Auburn
Community Memorial Hall last Tuesday.
