Electrical power users in Clinton got an early Christmas present this week, when the local Public Utilities Com nission decided they won't be raising rates on January 1st, unlike most area municipalities, who will see a six to nine percent increase. Despite an air of confusion that prevented a group of Huron County residents from clearly defining its goals, a Society for the Freedom of Choice was formed at an infor- mal meeting in Goderich recently. 10 years ago December 20, 1973 Reeve Elgin Thompson suggested to coun- cil that provided the residents of Vanastra were agreeable they should be allowed to in- corporate. Ontario motorists can now obtain 1974 passenger car and trailer licence plate renewals at the 291 issuing offices throughout the Province. 25 years ago December 18, 1958 Nearly 300 children received a gift and bag of candy from Santa Claus at the Clinton Legion Christmas tree in the hall on Sunday afternoon. The auditorium of the hall was filled to overflowing for the annual party. Miss Elizabeth Inder won $15 with her prize-winning essay in a contest carried out in Huron County by the Christmas Seal com- mittee of the Huron Tuberculosis Associa- tion. It placed ahead of 64 other entries. Free clinics for innoculating dogs and cats against the rabies disease have been held throughout the county and were completed yesterday. Word was received last night from Charles S. MacNaughton, MLA, Exeter, that the plan for 12 new homes in Clinton to be built under the full recovery project has been approved by both the provincial and federal governments. 50 years ago December 21, 1933 Chief Strong, as might be expected, is not going to get into any trouble by neglecting necessary legal action. He was the first roan to purchase a 1934 car licence from the local vender; and this is the second year he has had this distinction. The Businessmen's Association and Board of Trade of Clinton have received a telegram from Santa Claus informing them that he expects to be in Clinton on the after- noon of Friday, Dec. Mid. He has requested all boys and girls to be present from within a radius of six miles, with a special invitation to Dad and Mother to come with the boys and girls. The time he will arrive will be between three and three -thirty o'clock, just depends on the weather. How he will arrive no one knows, nor just what time, but he will be here without fail. He sent a telegram to the Clinton band to be on hand and they have informed Santa they would be there weather permitting. Sg come one come all and enter into the spirit of Christmas and let us make this event a great success. Old Santa will of course, have something for boys and girls. 75 years ago December 24, 1908 The inmates of the House of Refuge will be given a treat on Tuesday evening next when the local Oddfellows will give an entertain- ment and pass around good cheer, the pro- gram to be along the same lines as that of last year which was so much appreciated. We have been told that one of the features will be a "duel" between one of the inmates and an Oddfellow but of course no dangerous results will ensure. The dedication services at St. Joseph's Church on Sunday last were of a most solemn and impressive character. It was an event which will be long remembered by the citizens of Clinton, and particularly by the members of St. Joseph's Church. The ceremony of the blessing and solemn dedication of the church to Divine worship was performed by Right Rev. Monsignor Meunier of Windsor, Administrator of the Diocese of London. The whole community has been watching with much interest the pluck and enterprise of the baptists in erecting their new church in the village of Auburn, and they are to be congratulated on the successful issue of their efforts which resulted in the church be- ing opened in four months after the cor- nerstone was laid. 100 years ago December 19, 1883 Continued Infelicity - The Coulson Tamil; . whose affairs have become a family story to London magisterial circles and not unknown in Clinton, are in trouble again. The husband and wife have not been living together. for months past, but steps towards reconcilia- tion were recently being taken. The wife has been keeping boarders on Dufferin Avenue and he was boarding at a hotel. A few even- ings ago she obtained money from him to aid her in going to see one of their children in Detroit, and it is now alleged that instead of doing this she packed two large trunks with her effects and flitted to Buffalo, where it is said she is still stopping. Peculiar Sunsets - For several weeks past there have been particularly glowing sunsets. The Western Horizon has been lit up also all the varied shades of illumination from the fiery red to the most beautiful mellow golden, with a gradual blending of these two extremes into vari-colored in- termediate tints. In some places the ex- treme lurid glare just at the horizon ap- peared to change as its effects extended zenith -ward, and assisted by atmospheric causes produced flame -like results as though an immense fire had taken place. In some localities the fire engines were gotten out in consequence of these phenomena. (MINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1983 -PAGE 5 SUNRISE 2% PARTLY SKIMMED MILK 4 L.
