The $700,000 addition brings to 50 the number of beds available to cancer patients rom outside London who require accom- modations while undergoing treatment at the London Cancer Clinic. Funds for the project were provided by the Canadian Cancer Society from three sources: limited local fundraising; designated bequests or legacies to the Cana- dian Cancer Society which must be used in the southwestern Ontario area; and funds from the Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society which were raised during the Society's annual fundraising campaign in April. Thameswood Lodge is operated by the On- tario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation's London Cancer Clinic. cam; ;,cepfacilityd' The most recent addition was the second since the Lodge opened in 1962 with 18 beds. In 1970,12 beds were added to the facility. Two of the new bedrooms were designated for handicapped patients and an elevator has been added to the facility. In addition to the new bedrooms, there is an active lounge for games such as ping pong or shuffleboard and a craft room where volunteers instruct guests in macrame, knitting, oil painting and other crafts. There is a quieter lounge for reading or watching television and a small privacy room where guests may visit with family, friends or clergy. Thameswood Lodge serves all of southwestern Ontario, with guests coming from as far north as the Bruce Peninsula, as far west as Sarnia and as far east as the Kit- chener/Waterloo and Cambridge areas_ Family members wishing to stay at the Lodge with guests are permitted to do so at a cost of $25 a night or $100 a week including meals, providing a bed is available. The Lodge addition is the second major project to receive Canadian Cancer Society funding recently. The first was the breast cancer screening clinic at 373 Hill Street in London which was established as part of a national program to determine if x-ray ex- amination is more effective in detecting cancer in its early stages than is physical examination alone. Over the next year and a half, the clinic hopes to recruit at least 4,500 women between the ages of 40 and 59. Volunteers for the program are being sought from throughout southwestern On- tario. The Canadian Cancer Society raises funds to support patient services and education programs as well as research into the causes of cancer and its cures. In 1983, $12,246,350 was raised in Ontario. Of this, $1,199.448 was raised in southwestern Ontario. Consumers get break, egg prices -remain steady As cooks around the country prepare for the holiday season, egg prices certainly aren't going to dampen any Christmas spirits in the kitchen. There won't be any change in the price paid to egg producers for Grade A large this month, the Canadian Egg Marketing Agen- is cy (CEMA) announced recently, after earlier forecasts had indicated that higher feed costs would push up egg prices through the end of the year. The news couldn't come at a better time for consumers. December is traditionally the period of highest egg consumption because of holiday baking. CEMA calculates the producer price for eggs at the beginning of each month using a mathematical formula that reflects pro- ducers' production costs. This formula is monitored by the federal government's Na- tional Farm Products Marketing Council. The actual price paid by consumers is determined to ed b retailers. This is a scene from the play, "The Christmas Story", performed by Mrs. Joanne Telford's Grade 2 students at 14olmesville Public School's annual Christmas concert held Monday evening.
