1.39 PAGE 14-CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1983 A 12 -year old boy in Stoeeffville worked fast when grease burst into flames on the stove, and his mother was scalded. She was so badly injured and frightened that she tried to fight him off, but he managed to get cold water on her arms and legs, and called its an ambulance. Doctors have told his mother she has the use of her arms and hands because the boy knew first aid. A Toronto woman, having dinner with her husband and friends, choked on a bit of meat. No one noticed what was wrong with revp i i her, and she couldn't speak to tell them. She and her husband both had SI John Am- bulance first aid training, so she went to him and sat on his lap. When he then realized that she was choking to death, he slapped her on the back and applied a chest thrust nt u ec ssa and saved her life. These true stories have happy endings because someone knew what to do when an accident happened. They are offered as a reminder that accidents happen in our homes every day. We leave infants untended to fall off beds and tables or into bathtubs and backyard pools. We choke on foods, ingest poisons, and burn ourselves, sometimes to death: In Ontario accidents kill 1,000 people in a year, and send another 1,500 to the d - ,,--1 r or the hospital. First aid and safety experts at St. John Ambulance suggest you take a leaf from in- dustry's book and cut down the potential for accidents at your house by organizing a family safety program. Here's a preventive check list. Falls: Never leave an Want on a bed or table that does not have guard rails. Never leave an infant alone in a tub or near a pool. Keep stairways free of litter or dangerous coverings. Be sure stairways have safe railings. Be sure stairways are well lighted. Wipe up spills on stairs and floors im- mediately. Do not use scatter rugs in dangerous areas. Do not apply slippery surfaces to floors. Secure ladders well and use them careful- ly. Use secure step stools to climb, not chairs or boxes. Burns: Keep baking soda within reach of stove for small fires. Kitchens: Turn pot handles away from elements or the stove edge. Unplug appliances not in use. Work carefully and without rushing. Workshop: Use blow torches, electric paint removers with care. Store flammable material carefully. Unplug appliances not in use. Wear protective clothing as needed. Around the House: Keep furnace e clean and in good repair. Keep fire place chimney clean. Use safe fireplace screens. Do not smoke in bed. Empty ash trays safely. Santa house a success KINCARDINE - Santa Mouse's visit to Kincardine this past weekend was a smashing success once again. The House of the Christmas Mouse, a place for children to make a Christmas craft, hear a story, shop in secret and visit with Santa Mouse, one of Santa Claus' special helpers, netted $6,042 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and exhausted organizers are "extremely pleased." Last year, the first time Santa Mouse visited Kincardine, $4,500 was raised for C.F. when 1100 youngsters visited The House of the Christmas Mouse in a house donated for the weekend by Ontario Hydro. This year, "the house" was in larger quarters in the Kinsmen Pa''ilion.
