Lyth council a, rves
raises for ,tu lic em,f loyees
By Rod Hilts
Blyth Council stuck closely to the
provincial wage restraint 6 and 5 guidelines
last week in granting specified village
employees five per cent wage increases
effective Jan. 1, 1984.
Councillor Albert Wasson summed up the
increase by saying, "It's the best we can do
for our people with what the law gives us."
Council passed a motion to increase the
reeve's salary five per cent ($65) to $1,365
per annum. Council held their salary in-
crease to five per cent as well from their
yearly earnings of $900. Each councillor will
make $945 per annum. The clerk treasurer's
salary will also increase five per cent
($1,070) from a present salary of $21,400 to
$22,470. The clerk will also receive a
travelling allowance of 25 cents per km, an
increase of three cents per km.
Councillors attending conventions and out
of town meetings will receive a $10 increase
to $60 per day plus 25 cents a km. For half
day meetings, council will receive $30 for a
half day, an increase of $5, plus the newly
established mileage rate.
The town foreman's salary will increase
five per cent ($835) from $16,700 a year to
$17,535. Part time foreman assistant will
receive a five per cent (39 cents an hour)
increase from $7.72 an hour to $8.11 an hour.
The village janitor will receive a salary
increase of five percent ($3.18) from $63.50
to $66.68 a month.
The village dog catcher's salary will in-
crease five per cent ($2.90) from $58 per
month (plus $10 per capture) to $60.90 per
month.
The village secretary will receive a five
per cent increase ( 33 cents) from $6.50 to
$6.83 an hour.
Casual labor and dump attendant will
receive a five percent increase (33 cents)
from $6.50 to $6.83 per hour.
Council set the garbage collector's rate at
$32.50 per hour. That's an increase of five
dollars per hour from the 1983 rate of $27.50
per hour.
New rental rates for hall
At the regular meeting of the Blyth
Municipal Recreation Committee
"Memorial Hall Committee" held Nov. 28
the rental rates of the hall were reviewed.
Effective Jan. 1, 1984 new rates will be in
effect. The Blyth Summer Festival, for ap-
proximately a 16 week period in the summer
will pay $185 per week. This includes sun-
dries and is subject to approval by the
Festival Board. Other rates are: Craft
room, $5; Main basement and kitchen, $45
per event; Auditorium for outside groups,
$80; Practice for outside groups, $35; Local
groups, Auditorium, $35; Local groups,
practice, $10; Rent of the Theatre Box of-
fice, $50 per month.
For the winter months rates are $20 for
the Blyth Lions Club and $10 for each event
held by the Blyth Women's Institute, Blyth
Euchre Club, Blyth Lost Heir Club, Blyth
Horticultural Society, Blyth Senior Citizens,
and 4-H Clubs.
The next meeting will be held on Jan. 3
when election of officers will take place.

Church last Sunday.
Rev. David Bauman off Braeside United

Poinsettia and white mum plants graced the
narthex and chancel. They were given by
the Evening Unit UCW and by church
members in memory of loved ones.
Memorial flowers were also placed by the
est inister
family of Mrs. Bessie Pollard. The work of
Nancy Pawitch and Ken Hamm in
decorating the sanctuary has added greatly
this month to the Advent services.
Sunday School Christmas
On Dec. 6 the Blyth United Church Cradle
Roll members held their Christmas Party in
the Church basement with a visit from San-
ta Claus. There were 30 children and their
parents present.
Santa handed out a gift to each child and a
lunch of cookies and juice was served by
Susan Howson, Elsie Walsh and Grace
Poore.
The Blyth United Church Sunday School
Christmas Concert will be held on Sunday,
Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. with special music by the
three choirs under the direction of Mrs.
Donald Kai.
Public relations help,
The Blyth Women's Institute met in the
Blyth Memorial Hall for a pot luck dinner on
Dec. 1.
After the dinner which was much enjoyed
by all present, Rev. Ken Bauman of Blyth
addressed the group. His topic was "Public
Relations". Rev. Bauman's address and
stories illustrated that not only may each
one work for Public Relations, but everyone
should.

Fire board bylaw under study
WINGHAM - Town Council has given two
readings to a bylaw establishing an area fire
board, but has held off on another bylaw
naming Dave Crothers as the fire chief.
In a recorded vote requested by Deputy
Reeve Patricia Bailey, council voted 7-2 to
give first and second reading to the fire area
bylaw. Fire Committee Chairman William
Crump said this will leave time for council
members to study the bylaw before it is
finally passed, which he said he hopes to
have done at the January meeting.
He invited any councillors with questions
to bring them to him and he would try to get
them resolved before then.
Only Mrs. Bailey and Mr. Currie voted
against the bylaw. Mr. Currie said he fully
supports the concept of the fire board, but
cannot accept the way the costs are being
shared among the municipalities.
Council agreed to table another bylaw ap-
pointing Mr. Crothers, who currently serves
as chief of the Wingham Fire Department,
as the chief under the new board. Some
councillo. s suggested it would be better to
allow the new fire board to select whom it
wants as chief before making the appoint-
ment. •
A wage request by the firefighter!; was in-
cluded on the agenda for the council
meeting, but was not discussed. Mr. Crump
said it is something the area fire board will
have to deal with.

Wingham, with the use of Television and
Video tape, showed their plan for more
renovations at Wingham Hospital. They
hope to get work underway early next year.
This renovation is badly needed to give
more space and privacy to the patients, also
they can probably attract more specialized
treatment for patients, and in some cases
save them the trip to and from a city
hospital. Donations to the Hospital Building
Fund gratefully accepted. The next WI
meeting is Jan. 5 at 2 P.M.
