Except for a few last minute checks of the ice making equipment, the new arena floor is ready for ice and the machinery could be turned on early next week. Tom Chuter, building inspector for Clin- ton, was present at the council meeting Monday night to discuss the possibility of getting a new map of the town. For more than 50 hours of volunteer work, a number of area girls received caps at a re- cent Candy Stripers evening for the Clinton Public Hospital. 10 years ago December 13, 1973 Clinton's 1975 centennial celebrations received a big boost from the Clinton Coun- cil when they voted $850.32 to repair and refurbish the town's 1928 fire truck. Dissatisfaction was expressed at the an- nual meeting of the Christian Farmers Federation with Canada's involvement in the World Food Program. Ontario's new approach to assessing farms for local tax purposes on the basis of the land's productivity has been well- received by the farmers of Bruce County, the first to be reassessed by the Provincial Government. 25 years ago December 11, 1958 A debate held between Huron and Bruce County Junior Farmers on Nov. 26, ended in a tie, despite special rules and regulations which had been devised. by the provincial committee, to avoid a tie decision. With more snow down in a shorter time, and earlier m the year than anyone had ex- pected, the town streets men have done a good job of clearing streets in the downtown area, and of ploughing some of the sidewalks. A special request by H. Brudsdon, manager of the Clinton Lions Arena, that Mary Street be cleared to ar- range for parking for the hockey game last Friday night, was heard, and the action taken assured plenty of space for the fans who came to see the Colts win their third game of the season. Mayor W.J. Miller, Reeve Burton Stanley, Councillor Robert N. Irwin and Clerk - treasurer John Livermore, are in Ottawa to- day for an audience with the Minister of Public Works, in regard to the hoped for ren- tal housing scheme for Clinton. 50 years ago December 14, 1933 Two crowded houses greeted the com- mencement program put on in the Clinton Collegiate auditorium on Thursday and Fri- day evenings of last week. And, judging from the attention given and the applause, the program was highly pleasing to the ma- jority present. A large crowd greeted the Kiltie Band at their first benefit concert given in the town hall on Sunday evening, under the leader- ship of Bandmaster Morgan Agnew, and many comments of praise were heard con- cerning the excellent program given. In a lively two-hour session, pandemonium at times reigning with the sound of the gavel and several members on their feet at one time, Huron County Council Wednesday unanimously ratified the report of warden's committee, embodying drastic clauses, the most contentious of which was that calling for the dismissal from office of George W. Holman, 77 -year-old clerk and deputy treasurer, after 16 years service. 75 years ago December 17, 1908 The skating rink was opened for the season last Saturday evening with a good patronage. The rink under Mr. Davis' management is always a popular resort in the winter time for the young people. The Standard elevator has been sold by Mrs. R. Irwin to Mr. W. G. Smyth who has had it rented for a few years. The brick por- tion was built by the late Jos. Whitehead four decades ago as a mill, but the re- mainder is a much more recent date, having been built by Mr. Irwin. The effects of the dry fall are beginning to be felt, the water in many of the wells throughout the whole district being now very low. A steady rain for 24 hours, while it would not be Christmas -weather like, would do a great deal of good. Tuesday being the last day for the pay- ment of taxes Chief Wheatley had a busy day of it. He was assisted by Sergeant Welsh, the two taking in over $6,500. The total receipts up to the 15th were this year just a little lower than last. 100 years ago 100 years ago December 12, 1883 Fairly Met -A clergyman who owns a farm found a ploughman sitting on his plough resting his horses. Quoth the clergyman -- "John, wouldn't it be a good plan for you to have a scythe here and be cutting a few bushes along the fences while the horses are resting a short time?" "Yes, sir," said John; "and wadn't it be weel for you tae hae a tub o' tattles in the . it and, when the folk were singin', peel t . m a while to be ready for the pat?" Mr. Austin Callander has received the castings for the barrows which he recently invented and had patented. No doubt he will make things boom in the near future. ,..I. r CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1983 -PAGE 5 EXTRA FINE GRANULATED SUGAR 2 KG 1 .39 SAVE UP TO 60, CLOVER LEAF OR MAPLE LEAF SOCKEYE SALMON 7.75 OZ 1.99 SAVE UP TO 70" FOR RICE-QUALITycou RTESY PL LEWIS SLICED WHITE BREAD LOAF .59 SAVE UP TO 16, DELMONTE FROM CONCENTRATE TETRA-BRIK APPLE, GRAPEFRUIT ORANGE OR PINEAPPLE JUICE 3X2.50ML .89 SAVE UPTO70' S RED TAG SPECF.\LS EVERY WEE V8 VEGETABLE JUICE 48 FL OZ.
