more than ones that are brand new.
Once you begin to think of presents as
potential collectibles, the possibilities are
endless.
Dolls, decorative mugs, anything in
miniature from finely crafted furniture to
model cars, even bags of marbles and toy
soldiers can be the basis for a lifetime of
fun.

And, many a child has been set on the road
to years of collecting stamps and coins with
that first packet, neatly wrapped and left
under the tree on Christmas morning.
Get your child a batch of bright foreign
stamps and an album to put them in, or a
selection of coins from foreign countries,
even a diverse group of good old Canadian
pennies, and watch eyes and face light up.
on't let stains spoil
your festive time fun
Table linens, clothing, furniture and rugs
all take a beating during the festive season
and are prime targets for cranberry sauce,
wine, gravy, candle wax and alcoholic
beverages.
Make Christmas time more enjoyable this
year by following these tips on cleaning up
Yuletide stains, says Margaret Loewen,
clothing and textiel specialist with the rural
organizations and services branch of the On-
tario Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
"The best advice is to act quickly,
whatever the stain, because most can be
removed easily when fresh and not yet
dried,,, she says.
Cranberry sauce and wine are fruit stains
and should be soaked and sponged im-
mediately before they dry, with cold water
or soda water. Then clothing or tablecloths
should be laundered, using a pre-soak in an
activated enzyme product, in the hottest
water possible. For non -washable items,
rub a little glycerine (from the drug store)
into the stain and allow it to stand for about
one hour. Then treat it with a grease solvent
or a cleaning fluid such as perchlorethylene,
a non-flammable solvent available in most
drug stores.
Gravy stains can be removed easily by
first sponging with cold water (gravy is a
protein and hot water would set the stain),
then treating with a grease solvent if the
grease mark still remains. Then launder as
usual.
Candle was should be scraped off with a
dull knife. The remaining stain can be
treated with a cleaning fluid, and if a wax
color remains, sponge with equal parts of
rubbing alcohol and water. Washable items
can be bleached if necessary.
Alcoholic beverage stains should be at-
tacked before they dry, by sponging or soak-
ing the stain immediately in cold water or
soda water. If the fabric is washable,
launder in warm suds and rinse.
Around Christmas time, rugs and carpets
also get more than their share of mud and
salt from wet boots, and carbon black from
the fireplace.
Greasy dirt (some muddy stains from
boots) and carbon black should be treated
with a detergent solution made up of five
millilitres (one teaspoon) of powdered
detergent dissolved in 250 mL (one cup) of
water. Any remaining grease stains can be
removed with a grease solvent like per-
chlorethylene.
Dried salt stains (white residue) on
carpets can be removed with a solution of
1/3 vinegar in 2/3 water. Follow this with a
solution of 15 mL (one tablespoon) ammonia
in 200 mL (3/4 cup) water to neutralize the
vinegar.
Loewen says immediate attention and
proper treatment should help clothing and
carpets survive another festive season this
year.
