Attach a matching gift trim or seal. Round Boxes, Oval Boxes, Cylinders, and Tubes These shapes present the most problems to novice gift -wrappers, but with a little practice and by following these basics, you can turn out a perfect package every time. Trace the top and bottom of the box (or cylinder) and cut out two circles. Wrap the box, leaving a slight overlap so it can be turned under slightly. Secure with tape. The paper should extend over the top and bottom of the box slightly. Snip the edges of the wrapping paper even with the edges of the box. Secure with paste or tape. Attach the circles to the top and bot- tom with paste or concealed tape. For cylinders and tubes, wrap the paper around two or three times when you begin. Flare the ends of the completed gift wrap, or fringe them with the scissors like a party favor. Tips on'Iying Dress up your wrapped package with any one of a wide variety of ribbon and cord available in a myriad of colors. Fasten your chosen ribbon in basic fashion across the packge or on the diagonal, or use your im- ce ping eas agination to come up with a variation on these designs. An interesting effect can be created by basketweaving different colors of ribbon or yarn around a package. Or try an hourglass design ( works best with yarn and curl ribbon or cord). And don't forget to save your leftovers — you can use them on smaller packages. Do -It -Yourself Bows While there are a wide variety of beautiful pre -made bows available it's fun to try your hand at a personally styled one. Yarn and curl ribbon are the easiest to work with. To make a yarn bow, loop the yarn back and forth until the desired number of loops is reached. Tie very tightly in the centre with a separate piece of yarn and flare the loops out to form the bow. Knots may be tied in the loose ends of the yarn to create an in- teresting effect. You can create your own yarn pom pom by wrapping the yarn around a 3 x 5" file card. Tie the yarn in the centre with a piece of spook wire, then cut ends of loops with scissors. Shake the pom pom vigorously and trim the ends with a symmetrical ball. Roll it in your hands to make it flIz7y. To keep all your gift wrap supplies "under your thumb", keep everything — including scissors, tape, parcel post paper and twine, wrapping paper, ribbon, yarn, tags and trims — in an empty box or other portable container. Everyone loves records Make your gift musical You're stumped. No matter how hard you think, you just can't think of what to give Aunt Jane — she's got everything. And what about the Smiths? You want to gift the whole family with one present but some of the Smiths are on a diet, so you can't give them cookies or candy. For all those "difficult" names on your list — and every list has them — the solution is very simple. Give them the music of Christmas. Everyone, from a young nephew to a dowager aunt, enjoys listening to Christmas carols. And each year, record companies issue album upon album of music for the season, to suit every possible taste. For the classical music -lover, an album of liturgical music or Handel's "Messiah" would be a good choice. If your recipient leans more to popular music, there are albums galore featuring the top vocalists' renderings of old Christmas favorites.
