Hand wash silks
Special care will keep
Christmas looking good
Most care labels on 100 per cent silk
garments say "dry clean only" but in fact,
many silk items can be hand washed at
home, says Margaret Loewen, clothing and
textiles specialist with the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food's rural organiza-
tions and services branch.
First test a scrap of fabric for shrinkage
or running of color. Measure and then wash
the fabric scrap in lukewarm water and
milk pure soap. Note any color running from
the fabric. Rinse well, then let dry. Measure
to test for shrinkage. If none has occurred,
then it is safe to wash the garment. If color
runs, wash separately.
Wash the garment as you did the fabric
scrap, in pure soap and lukewarm water.
Squeeze the suds through the garment and
rinse well. Roll in a towel to squeeze out ex-
cess water, then iron immediately.
If you can't iron right away, roll in a se-
cond towel until you are ready to press. Iron
while still damp on low heat setting on the
wrong side of the fabric.
If you have a fabric scrap available
for testing, test for running of color in an in-
conspicuous place, such as an inside seam
allowance, the bottom edge of a tuck -in
blouse, or a tie belt.
Most manufacturers today use a water
spot resistant finish on silk, but untreated
silk can be easily water -spotted.
Test for water spotting by sprinkling
water on a.fabric scrap. I.et dry. If fabric
does water spot, protect the fabric with a
press cloth when ironing, and never press
using a steam iron.
Anti-perspirants also yellow silk and these
stains are difficult, if not impossible to
remove.
"Rather than using an anti-perspirant,
use a deodorant, which will ;i ain silk,"
she says.
