watering and feeding until all danger of
frost is past, then set them in the garden.
These will flower naturally in the fall.
NORFOLK ISLAND PINE (Araucania ex-
celsa I has its branches in symmetrical
whorls. It's the aristocrat of the potted
evergreens, and looks like a small
Christmas tree that is used by many apart-
ment dwellers, who haven't the room for a
large tree. These trees will last for years in
the apartment or in a home where the
temperature is low. Though this plant will
grow tall, it may be held in check by reduc-
ing the top.
POINSETTIA (Euphorbia pulcherrima ).
The newer varieties of this age old plant will
last and last from Christmas through
Mother's Day. A great deal has been done
by plant laybradtzers to make this a
"regular" house plant, rather than the
..temperamental" type of the past. Many
growers will confuse the leaf -like bracts
with the flowers. Actually the flowers are in-
conspicuous and the colorful show is provid-
ed by the large, scarlet, pink or cream
bracts.
It is still the most popular Christmas plant
for giving and receiving, and does best in
the home with good light exposure and a
temperature of about 65 degrees. Yellowing
the dropping of lower foliage may be caused
by temperatures below 60 degrees F, drafts,
and drying out at the roots_ Feeding with a
completely soluble fertilizer like Instant
Vigoro every two weeks after the plants are
well established is good house plant prac-
tice.

Tony Hogervorst, rural organizations co-
ordinator ( Ontario Horticultural Associa-
tion) with the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food's rural organizations
and services branch.
Some interesting gift ideas you could con-
sider include a pair of garden shears, books
on gardening, hanging baskets, decorative
pots or a watering can. A small compressed
air sprayer or hose -end spr, ,yer would be
useful in controlling insects and some
diseases. These sprayers can also be used to
apply fertilizer solutions to correct plant
nutrient deficiencies, he says.
Soil test kits can be purchased to help the
gardener analyze the garden soil's fertilizer
requirements.

centre. You'll find plenty of ideas for the
gardeners on your Christmas list."
December is Christmas concert time for school aged children. Area elementary schools
and Sunday School classes are now busily preparing for their stage presentations.
Party time do's and don'ts
Don't wait until party day to clean house.
You'll be too tired for your guests.
Don't get so wrapped up in one conversa-
tion that you forget your other guests.
Don't leave the television on when guests
arrive ... invited, or uninvited.
Don't force games, cards, TV or records
on guests.
Do personally talk with each guest at least
one time.
Do offer everyone something to eat or
drink.
Do leave all your outside lightg on,
especially this time of year.
Do try to draw all guests into a conversa-
tion that's suited to them.
Do put yourself in their place. What would
you expect at their house?
Just remember, a warm greeting and
good eating are the two keys to successful
hosting.
