Decorating your home for the holidays
doesn't have to cost a bundle. With a little
imagination, creativity, patience and some
time you can make your decorating dollar s -
t -r -e -t -c -h.
Start by trianrning the tree with inexpen-
sive household items. Strands of popcorn
and cranberry garland add a festive touch
to your fir and are less expensive than the
mass produced variety.
Two cups of popcorn, a pound of fresh
cranberries, one medium-sized spool of
thread and a needle can trim the tree. If
your budget can't handle the cost of
cranberries try loading up on the popcorn
and adding just a few berries per strand for
a colorful and natural touch.
The trimmings also make an interesting
snack for birds when the holidays are over.
Greenery accented by pine cones or rib-
bons add a festive touch to mantles, stair-
cases or doors. Just a few boughs of pine or
boxwood strategically placed provide good
looks and a fresh scent.
Candles, glassware, greenery and inex-
pensive Christmas trinkets can be turned in-
to attractive table centerpieces.
And don't forget the holiday editions of
magazines. Many contain step-by-step in-
structions and patterns for projects that use
inexpensive items found in the home.
If you can't spend the time stringing pop-
corn and berries, turn your tree trimming
into a party, enlisting the help of friends.
Make a few extra cups of popcorn and serve
it along with hot cider to fortify your trim-
mers.
Handtied bows and other decorations
made of dough, material scraps, felt or yarn
can add a crowning touch to the evergreen.
Check out discount shops for bargains on
bo* material.
DOUGH DECORATIONS are a favorite
tree trimming. Here's an inexpensive, easy
recipe and a few helpful hints.
2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
Combine flour and salt then add the water
a little at a time mixing thoroughly. Knead
the dough for 7-10 minutes until it's firm.
Work with small portions of dough and keep
the rest moist in a plastic bag.
After you've made the dough your im-
agination is the limit. You can use cookie
cutters to make ornaments and just about
any kitchen tools to fashion ornaments.
Paper clips and a garlic press make some
interesting imprints on the dough. You can
even braid three strands of dough and make
a wreath. Press tree hanging hooks right in-
to the ornaments before baking.
Bake the dough ornainents for about 1
hour at 325-350 degrees. After they've cool-
ed, use water colors or acrylic paints to
brighten them up. Then when the paint has
dried, seal the color with a clear varnish or
acrylic spray available at any hardware
store. If you don't want to paint your or-
naments simply seal them.
