Why are the Oilers on top? Well, one very big reason is the play of Brantford -native Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky is continuing to dazzle everyone who follows the game. In 27 games, the great one has 30 goals and 50 assists for 80 points. Teammate Jurri Kurri is the league's closest player in the top 10 scoring with 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points. Edmonton will win their division easily and there should be quite an even battle between Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg for second place. With approximately one-third of the schedule completed, my early season predictions are starting to take shape. On Oct. 5, I predicted the Minnesota North Stars to finish in top spot in the Norris Divi- sion. In the last month and a half they have risen from last to first and now stand with a 14-10-3 record. Look for that trade with Mon- treal for Acton and Napier in exchange for Smith to really pay off. Bobby Smith was a good offensive player but defensively he checks like a figure skater. Both Napier and Acton are good two-way players, who can really grind it out. The New York Islanders are also a team that is rebounding from a slow start. The Islanders are currently in second place in the Patrick division, one point behind the surprising New York Rangers. Look for the Rangers early season luck to run out and the Islanders to surge into the lead. The Washington Capitals are slowly turn- ing a disastrous start into a .500 record. I look for the Capitals to improve and even- tually finish second in the Patrick division. The Buffalo Sabres have surprised a lot of people with their good start. Rookie goaltender Tom Barrasso is playing phenomenal hockey 'for the Sabres. The 18 - year -old youngster, fresh out of the Buffalo high school hockey system, has a 2.28 goals against average in 14 games this season. The best defensive hockey club will win the Adams division and in my opinion that bat- tle will be between Boston and Buffalo. Both clubs are primarily grinders. IA.af update Be sure to read next week's column for an in-depth look at the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yours truly will be in Toronto for the Leaf - Blues game on Wednesday night. Poor selection Last Friday night, I attended a Junior A game between London Knights and Peter- borough Petes. The Petes won the game 3-2 and their goaltender Shawn Kilroy played like superman. The Knights outshot the Petes and had it not been for the cat -like reflexes of Kilroy, the Knights would have won. The three star selection by the London media was a big farce. London goalie Mike Bishop was chosen as the number one star much to my surprise. Bishop played well but he was upstaged by the sensational perfor- mance of Kilroy. Kilroy was named second star. To make matters worse the media picked another Knight as third star. Fan favorite Scotty Morrison was chosen even though he had no real impact on the game. The members of the London media, who made those choices, should either have their eyes or their heads examined! Minor Hockey Draw Winners At the Bantam hockey tournament on the weekend, Christopher Preston of Clinton won the draw for a $100 grocery voucher and turkey. Beth Knox of Londesboro won se- cond prize, which was 25 silver dollars on a hockey stick. Minor hockey results Atoms 10 Blyth 1 On Nov. 30, the Clinton Atoms travelled to Blyth and rolled to an impressive 10-1 vic- tory. Jason Fleet led the way scoring five times. Scott Jewitt notched a hat trick, while Shawn Chipchase and Ken Betties added singles. Jason Carter had two assists in the one-sided contest. Kevin Souch scored the lone Blyth goal to prevent Darryn Stevenson and Robbie Marriage from earning the shutout for Clinton. Clinton's next game is this Saturday at home to Hensall fora 5:45 p.m. start. Peewees 3 Wingham 0 On Nov. 29 the Clinton Peewees travelled to Wingham and shutout the host squad 2-0. Curtis McCone opened up the scoring when he cashed in on a rebound. Jason Wilson and Devon Colquhoun assisted on the play. The period ended with Clinton clinging to a 1-0 lead in a tough defensive contest. At 9:14 of the second period Colquhoun scored with an assist going to Greg Taylor. Seven seconds into the third period Derek Jefferson put the icing on the cake by not- ching an unassisted tally. Jefferson scooped up a loose puck behind the net and jammed it in the side. Mike Ladd and Richard Lyndon, who split \ the game in the Clinton nets, played well. ~` Peewees 21 Goderich B's 0 n Nov. 30, the Clinton Peewees humiliated the host Goderich team to the tune of 21-0. Devon Colquhoun slammed home five goals in pacing the Clinton attack. Norris Flynn scored four times and Derek Jef- ferson and Greg Taylor had three goals apiece. Mike Ladd and Richard Lyndon shared the shutout. Peewees 3 Seaforth 2 On Dec. 3, Clinton squeaked by Seaforth 3- 2. Few details were available at press time but it was reported that Scott Brown, Devon Colquhoun and Norris Flynn scored for Clinton. The Peewees next game is Dec. 10 at 7:30 when they host Seaforth. Clinton is un- defeated thus far in league play. Novice 15 Monkton 0 Last Thursday night Clinton Novice A's travelled to Monkton and outshot, outplayed and outscored their opposition. Clinton was all over Monkton and only good goaltending by the host team kept the score to 15-0. The goals and assists for Clinton were as follows: Mark Livermore from Chris Kenrredy, Lee Gibbings unassisted, Livermore from Scott Wright, Livermore from Wright, Gibbings from Danny Wild- fong and Nathan Burns, Wright from Wildfong and Gibbings, Kennedy from Livermore, Gibbings from Wildfong, Jonathan Hugill unassisted, Kennedy from Shane MacDonald and Livermore, Hugill unassisted, Livermore unassisted, Gibbings from Wildfong, Gibbings from Wildfong and Burns and Livermore assisted by MacDonald., Novice 3 Seaforth 2 Excellent hockey was played Monday night when Seaforth travelled to Clinton with a fast game resulting in a 3-2 win for Clinton. In the latter part of the first period Mark Livermore scored assisted by Scott Wright and Chris Kennedy. Clinton's number 16, Jonathan Hugill, scored with 58 seconds remaining in the period with assists going to Scott Shaddick and Tyler Brady. The second period was scoreless but Seaforth tightened up the scoring in the third `period with Mike Watt scoring unassisted. Shane MacDonald and Kris Kennedy assisted on Clinton's third goal scored by Mark Livermore. With 58 seconds remaining in the game Seaforth's Mike Deveraux scoring from Mike Coyne. Clinton's defensive players of the game were Scott Wright, Jeff Oesch, Tyler Brady and Brian Watson. These players played excellent defense -in keeping Seaforth under control. Derek Hoggarth gave his team- mates superb goaltending. Injuries from everyday hand tools such as hammers and screw drivers are common occurrences. Visit us in Clinton Every Monday Representanve• BOB McCLINCHEY Clinto By Rod Hilts Many people were shocked when the Clinton Mustangs earned their first official win of the season last Friday night. When the buzzer sounded to end the third period in Walkerton, the scoreboard read Visitors 4 Home 2. Some of the players were probably surprised. One man who wasn't surprised was Head Coach Bob Zimmer. "We're improving and we're starting to play as a unit. It was a good team effort. Walkerton is a lot closer to our calibre and they didn't check us like a lot of other clubs had," Zimmer explained. Pat Cronin played a strong game between the pipes kicking out 32 Black Hawk shots. The Mustangs killed off four two-man disadvantages in posting their second win in 17 games. Clinton's first win of the season came on Nov. 6 when they won a protest against Hanover. The Barons had allegedly used an ineligible goaltender in a 4-4 tie against Clinton. Walkerton opened the scoring in the game at 14:58 when Paul Snodgrass connected with an assist going to Kevin Elliott. Clinton fought back and tied the score with 52 seconds remaining in the period as defenseman Darryl Madge scored while his team was shorthanded. Tom Smith was the work horse on this goal as he blocked a shot at the blueline and then fed Madge with a perfect pass. Madge broke in alone, drilled a shot, which was stopped by goalie Al Davis and scored on his own rebound. Tom Smith scored in the second period to put the Mustangs ahead. His goal was assisted by Brad Armstrong. The Mustangs played the first four minutes of the third period shorthanded but in the few remaining seconds of the penalty, Walkerton's Dan McNagoin scored to tie the score. Clinton stormed back with two powerplay goals in the period to claim the victory. Defenseman Shawn Rahbek scored at the eight -minute mark assisted by Brad Hymers. On the powerplay, Rahbek cruised in from his point position and rifled a shot along the ice that caught the Black Hawk goalie flat-footed. Dean Armstrong scored the insurance marker for Clinton at 17:38 on the power- play. Rahbek and Sean Van Dongen collected assists. Dean's goal came on a scramble and to say the least, it took a lot off of Clinton's back. Mustang Trainer Bryan Marriage called the effort "Clinton's best thus far." He said Clinton played a good checking game and that Pat Cronin came up with numerous gs un saves early in the game to keep the Mustangs in it. Coach Zimmer credited his players for "not lying down." He said his team took a lot of stupid, retaliation penalties but still didn't give up. Wingham 11 Clinton 3 A terrible second period was the downfall of the Mustangs last Sunday as they were mauled 11-3 in Wingham. "We have to play 60 minutes off hockey," Coach Zimmer said following the game. "If we would have played the same way we played in the third period it might have been a different game." The Mustangs adapted the "let's get physical" style off play in the third period and knocked down anything that was wearing white, blue and gold. Tom Smith led the charges -.with a number of thumping checks. Unfortunately the score was 9-3 for Wingham when Clinton decided to play aggressively. Clinton starting netminder Jim Terry got off to a shaky start as the Ironmen pumped four fitst-period goals past him. At 4:53, Rick Scrimgeour wheeled in front of the net and poked home his own rebound. One minute later Randy Marriage scored his first of three for Clinton as he snuck in from the side of the net and jammed the puck past Rob Schistad. Wingham's second goal was scored by Ken Fitzgerald as he unloaded a slapshot from the edge of the faceoff circle that beat Terry to the stick side. The Ironmen made it 3-1 at 8:26 when Troy Pocaluyko scored his first of three. Pocaluyko's shot was weak as it flutter -buzzed past Terry, again to the stick side. Jim LaGrande gave Wingham a three -goal lead at 13:01 when Terry failed to come out and challenge him. LaGrande caught the Clinton goalie backing into his net as the puck scooted into the top corner off Terry's glove. The second period was dominated by Wingham as they flashed the red light five times. Rick Schicstik, Steve Nicholson, Kevin Coultes and Pocaluyko with two, accounted for the damage. Marriage with two, concluded the Clinton scoring. Both of his goals came on powerplays. Terry was called on to stop four breakaways in the period. Cronin took over in the third period and played well yielding two goals. Despite the four minor penalties Tom Smith took in the final period, it was his play that literally scared the Ironmen off the scoreboard. Coach Zimmer commended the play of Smith saying if we had more Tommy Smiths we'd have no problem winning games." Zimmer said that Smith took it on himself to be a leader and that he added some intensity on the ice. Zimrn r noted that some of the goals that Winghalli scored "no goaltender could stop." He said Wingham have some good shooters. In summing up his team's performance after 17 games this season, he said, "several kids are advancing but they still can't put it all together." Clinton will have a chance to put it together on home ice this Friday night when • tn they face the Port Elgin Bears for an 8:30 p.m. game. On Sunday the Mustangs travel to Walkerton, looking for anotherwin over the Black Hawks in a 2 p.m. game. + + + Snowmobiling is fun, but is can be dangerous. Pat ('ronin made sure Wingham Captain Kevin Coultes didn't score on this occasion. Coultes and his teammates scored 11 goals on the Mustangs in an 11-3 romp last Sunday.
