ec `s th anniversary
cele rate 'r l: on two
separate ccasions
By Mary Chessell
VARNA - Bob and Elva Peck celebrated
their fortieth wedding anniversary on Dec.
1, and were honored on two occasions
recently.
Friends and neighbors surprised them at
a gathering at the home of Jim and Kate
Keys on Nov. 28. On Dec. 3 and 4, Bob and
Elva's six children, their spouses and three
of their nine grandchildren joined the guests
of honor at Wheels Motor Inn, Chatham.
Everyone had a great time swimming,
bowling and enjoying the other facilities. A
Sunday afternoon banquet at the Venus do
Milo Restaurant in Chatham was the
culmination of an enjoyable weekend of
family fellowship.
The annual Senior Citizens' Christmas
Party sponsored by the Recreation Commis-
sion is being held at the township hall in Var-
na on Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. in the afternoon. So
come on out, all you 'seniors" and have a
good time.
Pete and Lynda Postill returned Nov. 30
from a two-week trip to the West Coast.
They stayed for a few days with Graham
and Bev Postill of Airdrie, Alta. and visited
Mel and Doris Simmons of Calgary and Jeff
Gibbings and Sharon Thompson of Sylvan
Lake. Marshall and Bev took them on a day
trip up to Rocky Mountain House, Jasper
and LakeLouise. Lo use. On their bus trip through
the mountains they stopped at Rogers Pass,
Kelowna and Vernon.
While touring the Vancouver area they
stayed with Jon Murray Torrance in Surrey.
Interesting places they saw there were
downtown Vancouver with the densest
population in the world at 50,000 people per
square mile, and the South Shore com-
munities where there are $200,000 - $300,000
homes, some even worth over $1 million.
They saw the Lions Gate Bridge, visited the
McMillan -Bloedel Conservatory, Vancouver
Aquarium, Queen Elizabeth Park, Gastown
and Chinatown, which has the largest
Chinese community in North America. Grey
Cup revelers were everywhere.
They took the Royal Victoria Tour of Lulu
Island, Delta Island which is surrounded by
dykes because it's below sea level, Saanich
Island, an Indian community, the museum
in Victoria, the Empress Hotel and the
English style shops, and also saw the
beautiful Parliament Buildings lit up at
night. Butchart Gardens were beautiful
even in winter. An exciting experience was
sailing on her brother's sailboat.
It was beautiful and sunny while they
were in Calgary, with thick hoar frost on
everything in the morning. It rained most
days when they were in Vancouver. Pete
and Lynda really enjoyed their holidays,
and would like to see it again in summer.
Ten tables of euchre were in play at the
Orange Lodge's first card party of the
season Friday evening in the township hall.
Betty Thornspon and Alice Boyce won the
ladies high and low prizes, Bruce McClin-
chey and Greg Taylor the men's high and
low. Draw prize winners were Margaret
Dowson, Norene Hatyer and Alice Boyce.
Sunday School students and teachers con-
ducted the worship service in Varna Church
on Sunday, with Nancy Webster the leader.
Pat Norman's story of the Advent Apple
showed her to be a superb story teller. Other
stories were told by Brian Chessell, Darryn
McAsh and Krista McAsh. Sandra Coultis
read the scripture lesson. Gordon Hill lit the
second Advent candle, assisted by Mary
Ellen Webster who read the Bible verse.
The children placed their gifts for the
Christmas Bureau of Family and Children's
Services under the tree, and Darryn McAsh
and Jim Hill received the offering.
A beautifully decorated Sunday School
room greeted members, former members
and guests for the annual potluck supper of
Varna U.C.W. An attractive smorgasbord of
delicious food was enjoyed.
Julie Webster entertained with piano
music prior to the meeting, and also played
several Christmas selections during the
worship service.
Helen Taylor, Doris Wilson and Debbie
Rathwell were hostesses for the evening,
and led in worship with the readings. Scrip-
ture was from Luke 2 and Debbie led in
prayer. Ruth Johnston and Margaret Hunt
received the offering.
During a short business meeting, it was
decided to pack boxes for shut-ins on the
afternoon of Dec. 14 at Mary Chessell's
home. Donations for these will be gratefully
received. Doris Wilson read the slate of of-
ficers for next year, which will remain the
same except for the supper committee con-
venor. To date no one has been found to fill
this vacancy, also no one for vice-president.
Dianne Gerstenkorn, who has the Flower
Basket in Hensall, displayed a variety of
Christmas centrepieces and showed how to
make an attractive door decoration using a
small sled as a background. Rachel
Johnston was the winner of Dianne's gift.
