Moody Blues
popularity
will continue
By Janet Tench
The first rock group to use a full orchestra
(on their album Days of Future Past) has
come .out with their most rock oriented
album to date. Their single, "Sitting at the
Wheel" spent seven weeks on the Billboard
charts.
The Moody Blues is a popular band that
will continue to be thus for many reasons:
their musical style is consistently good, they
place emphasis on their music, and they
write well.
Of course, the Moody Blues' new album
does differ from their numerous others. On
the negative side, "Sitting at the Wheel", as
well as a few other songs, sounds a great
deal like Bruce Springsteen fronting for
ELO. Also, the music of The Present is less
relaxing than "Long Distance Voyageur"
(which I'd give a 10). But the album's full
sound enhances "Meet Me Halfway", a love
song.
Why is this latest work of the British
Moody Blues called The Present? The Pre-
sent is full of generalizations that deal with
the man of today. The line that sums it lup,
by telling how man's future is formed
( remember, one's future becomes the pre-
sent) is: "And it's only what you do / That
keeps coming back on you."
Rating: 7'/2 out of 10.

Pyromania by Def Leppard
A few readers have said that I've been
reviewing records that aren't exactly
Billboard material. Allow me to point out
that I reviewed the Payolas album before
their video of "Where is this Love" was
released, and I gave you a rundown of the
Q rock magazines available one month before
Creem did. But, just to keep you happy I will
now review of an album that has sold over
four million copies - more than half this
figure in cassettes 1 which means you pro-
bably listen to it on gravel runs I ... Def Lep-
pard's Pyromania.
ressers e
Pyromania, their third album, is strong;
it is lyrical rock, with many catchy riffs.
Rock anthems have come from this album.
"Rock! Rock ! Till You Drop!" and "Rock of
Ages". The song "Too Late," although a
love song, still rates as a touring tune.
How does Def Leppard compare with
other rock bands? Quiet Riot and Kiss are a
little heavier rock, with Iron Maiden and
AC -Dc much more into loud noise. Why has
Def Leppard sold so well with Pyromania
than the new albums of the forementioned
groups? There are two major reasons.
First, Def Leppard, whose name is
subliminally representative of Led Zepplin,

Anne Murray establishes
a sell-out record for
Centre in the Square
KITCHENER - Tickets for ANNE MUR-
RAY'S first appearance at THE CENTRE
IN THE SQUARE went on sale at 8:30 a.m.,
November 10 to Monthly Calendar
subscribers only and, five days later, had
sold more than 95 per cent of two shows
(close to 4,000 tickets).
This has resulted in establishing THE
CENTRE IN THE SQUARE'S record for
box office sales in the shortest time period.
Of special interest is the fact that these two
performances were sold out to Monthly
Calendar subscribers only and there were
no tickets available for the general public
box office opening date of November 19.
ANNE MURRAY performed at THE
CENTRE IN THE SQUARE on November
28 and 29.
ANNE MURRAY recently observed that
her "time has come" but her career attests
to the fact that she's been right in step all
along. As the blond Canadian songstress
enters her fifteenth year of music, she has
collected 20 American chart hits, three
Grammy Awards, 19 Juno Awards, six gold
and two platinum albums in the U.S., and at-
tracted countless devoted fans from Monte
Carlo to Minneapolis.
ANNE MURRAY'S first single,
"Snowbird", launched her as a singer
without stylistic bounds, scoring on the pop,
country and adult contemporary charts, and
earning her the first U.S. gold record ever
awarded to a female Canadian artist. After
a string of hit singles, Anne won her first
Grammy Award in 1974 for "Love Song,"
but it wasn't until after the birth of her first
child in 1976 that the entire world began to
sing along with her No. 1 hit songs. "My
career never really took off until I got my
life together," says Anne.
ANNE attributes success to her insistence
that her family come first, a policy which
has given her the confidence and freedom
that come from remaining faithful to one's
beliefs. "I know that my fans want me to
grow," she says, "but they also want me to
remain ANNE MURRAY."

presents an image unlike other heavy metal
`rands. The band dresses new wave - bright
olors in fashionable styles. this helps make
.he band seem to be a hip band to listen to.
Secondly, Def Leppard uses the Beatles
principle. The Beatles wrote simple tunes
that people could SING. Def Leppard has
done the same. Why is this successful? It is
inbred in people, from public school, to like
to sing. This is how Def Leppard comes out
on top.
Pyromania is good hard rock, able to
warm up any party. It is an important step
in the career of Def Leppard. The band now
has a solid following, and songs that will be
great live.
