people of St. Marys were startled. to
learn on Friday last that E. A. CaW-
sey, of Stratford, formerly a highly
respected citizen here, had. been killed
at 'Renfrew. A, derrick was being re-
moved for the last time. He was
directing the raising of the heavy
mast, when one of the guys gave wa,y,
the mast swerved and came down.
The men ran and escaped. Mr. Caw
sey stepped aside but was too close and
was struck by the heavy timber on
the back and. crushed. towards the
ground. A log caught part of the
weight and prevented the mast going
right to the grolind and Mr. Cawsey
was enabled to drag himself out
from underneath unaided, but was
seen to be seriously injured. He was
tenderly. removed to Victoria hospital,
but expired. in a few moments after
reaching there. Be was buried with
Masonic honors in Avondale cemetery.

from (Jape Town, that Charles Wes-
ley Meehan, of St. Marys, who had
enlisted for service in South Africa,
had died of enteric fever, near Vet

It will be remembered by the most
of our readers that on the first day of
December last, while on his way with
his wife and sisters to attend the even-
ing service of Exeter Main st. Ildetho-
dist church, Mr. White slipped on the
ice which had formed on the sidewalk
when, tear church, and, falling, broke
his right leg near the thigh. He was
conveyed horae with all possible expe-
dition and medical assistance immedi-
ately summoned. The 'broken bone
was set at once, and the patient put
in bed, from which, unfortunately, he
was doomed never to rise For some
time, although in bed, he was able to

ial work connected with the paper. his
general health, aside from the broken
leg, being fairly good, a condition
which led. to the general conclusion
that in a few weeks he would be about
as usual attending to the business.
VVhen the usual time allowed for the

ploma in Agriculture at the Ontario
Agricultural College, Guelph. He has
a,slo the degree of B. Agr., from Iowa
Agr. College, of D. V. X. from the
Veterinary Department of the Iowa
State College, and of Me D, V„ (post
grad.) from McKillop College, Chicago.
For several years Dr. Hopkins prac-
ticed his profession in Manitoba, and
was at a later date appointed Instruc-
tor in Animal Flusbandry at the Agri-
cultural College University of Wiscon-
sin. This position he resignea to be-
come Associate Editor of the Far-
mers' Advocate, Winnipeg, Men„with
which paper be remained until called
to his present duties. Dr. Hopkins is
also the author of "Veterinary Ele-
ment" a manual for farmers and
Agricultueal students, which has been
accorded high praise by leading au-
thorities as a treatise of great value to
every man who has stock under his
care. Dr. Hopkins leaves immediate-
ly for Great Britain in order to he pre-
pared. for this season's importations of
live stock. His address until tbe close
of navigation on the St. Lawrence,
will be 52 St. Enoch Square, Glasgow,
Scotland. The certificates issued by
him will be accepted by the United
States authorities in the same way as
were those issued by Dr. Rutherford
last season.
