The 1984 Stratford Festival season pro-
mises an exciting and varied array of the
finest classical and lyric theatre. On the
Festival stage audiences will see: A Mid-
summer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet,
The Merchant of Venice, Love's Labour's
Lost and Tartuffe are revivals from the cur-
rent season.
At the Avon Theatre will be three Gilbert
and Sullivan operettas: A revival of the
smash hits The Mikado and The Gondoliers
and a new production of Iolanthe.
At the Third Stage: Henry IV, (Part 1), is
the first of two Young Company produc-
tions. Another drama presentation, a small
cast show featuring the Company's senior
actors, will complete the Third Stage pro-
gramxning.
A Midsummer Night's Dream directed by
John Hirsch and designed by Desmond
Heeley will open the 1984 season. Current
company members who have been offered
parts in the production include: Brian Bed-
ford as Bottom, Patricia Conolly as Titania,
Nicholas Pennell as Oberon, Rosemary
Dunsmore as Helena and Diego Matamoros
as Puck. Romeo and Juliet follows next on
the Festival stage though no further details
are available at this time.
Canadian contralto Maureen Forrester
has been offered the role of Queen of the
g and casti
Fairies in Iolanthe (an operetta offering a
delectable combination -of fairy magic and
political satire). Miss Forrester recently
worked with director -choreographer Briar►
Macdonald on a production of Cendrillon at
the New York City Opera. Iolanthe will be
the third production to be seen opening
week.
Michael Langham's highly acclaimed
production of Love's Labour's Lost will be
re -mounted on the Festival stage with John
Neville creating the role of Don Armado and
tentatively, Garrick Hagon as the King of
Navarre.
It is expected that Maria Ricossa will
return as the Princess of France, Joseph
Ziegler as Berowne, Colm Feore as
Longaville and Diego Matamoros as
Nathaniel. Torquil Campbell, the talented
young son of Festival stalwart Douglas
Campbell, has been asked to play Moth.
Love's Labour's Lost will be the final pro-
duction of opening week.
In early August, Festival newcomer Mark
Lamos will direct The Merchant of Venice
on the Festival stage. In The Merchant of
Venice John Neville will play Shylock,
Domini Blythe has been offered the role of
Portia, and Rosemary Dunsmore the role of
Nerissa.

A revival of Tartuffe with Brian Bedford
in the title role and Douglas Campbell as
Orgon will be re -mounted on the Festival
stage, directed by John Hirsch.
In addition to the Gilbert and Sullivan
operettas, one or two drama productions
may be staged at the Avon Theatre, as
autumn late -season openers.
At the Third Stage, Michael Langham will
acain lead the Young Company and will
direct Henry IV. (Part f). Douglas Camp-
bell will join the Third Stage as a senior
member of the Company and play the role of
Falstaff.
Although the 1983 season ended on Oc-
tober 22, activity backstage is still ongoing.
This week, As You Like It is being taped on
the Festival satge by the CBC for broadcast
later in the year. Director John Hirsch will
oversee the production with CBC Director
Herb Roland and Producer Sarn Levene.
The Gondoliers will be taped November 2-11
in CBC's Studio 7 in Toronto.
Gingerbread house workshop
VANASTRA - Have you ever wondered
how the wicked witch from Hansel and
Gretal ever created her delectable Ginger-
bread House? Or the anticipation Hansel
and Gretal must have felt while munching
on the sweets decorating the witch's house?
Well, fairy tales can come true. We're not
trying to turn you into a wicked witch, but
you can design and create your own Ginger-
bread House, (miniature size, of course ).
For two days (two hours each day) you
will receive instruction on preparing your
base mai-lr'rt pattern pier.. hokinv prrne' I
pieces, and assembling and decorating your
own house. A complete miniature Ginger-
bread House and other items perfect for
your family's Christmas or as gifts for
friends will be the magic of this Christmas.
The workshop will take place November
29 and December 1, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the
Vanastra Recreation Centre. The cost of
$20.00 will include instruction, pattern and
recipe booklet and materials. Start the holi-
day spirit by pre -registering by calling 482-
3544.

munity Centre on Nov. 10 when the local WI presented their annual variety show.

After Five Club to hold
first annual fall fair
On Tuesday, November 22 from 7:30 to
9:30 p.m., the Goderich and District After
Five Club will hold a Country Fair Dessert
and Coffee at the Candlelight Restaurant in
Goderich.
During the "special feature" time,
everyone will have an opportunity to pur-
chase Christmas items, crafts, candy and
baked goods, and preserves. Anyone
wishing to donate same, may drop off their
pre -priced items at any of the executive
members' homes, or, at the Candlelight
Restaurant on Tuesday afternoon or early
Tuesday evening (November 22).
Bonnie Dunn will be providing music for
the evening. Bonnie is a well-known musi-
cian in the Goderich area.
