TESf(UCEFIELD - Sharri MacDonald was
born with a handicap. But, even though her
left arm ends at her elbow, the 15 -year-old
canoeist doesn't let it slow her down. After
competing in canoe races for three years,
she has won a trophy from the Ontario
Marathon Canoe Racing Association.
The trophy for the handicapped canoeist
who has accumulated the most points in
races came as a surprise to Sharri when her
trainer, Dick Kloss brought the award over
! i
rise for ca
to her house last week.
"I had no idea I was getting the award,"
she says.
Sharri started paddling when she was in
Grade 8 at Huron Centennial Public School.
Her friends Kim Rathwell and Rachel Munn
took her canoeing and she soon joined the
group of children who go canoeing with Mr.
Kloss.
"Sharri learned to paddle very quickly the
first day I took her out - more quickly than

with only one arm, she competes in the top canoe racing events. (Huron Expositor photo)

drnost kids do. Canoeing is more difficult for
her than for someone with two good arms
but she doesn't let that get her down," says
Mr. Kloss.
Holding the top of the paddle with her left
arm, Sharri finds she can control the paddle
pretty well although it sometimes slips.
When she and Mr. Floss paddle together,
they have a system; since Sharri finds it dif-
ficult to change sides quickly, they forget
about being together when they paddle.
"It works. We've passed other canoes that
way," says Mr. Kloss.
Though she's mostly raced in special
races for the handicapped, Sharri would like
to race in regular races.
"Regula' races are more of a challenge.
It feels like I've accomplished more when I
finish a regular race," she says.
So far, Sharri enjoys canoeing more for
the fun than the competition. She's com-
peted in races as long as eight miles and
practices for two weeks before races. But,
she can see herself training harder in the
future.
"I'd like to try racing in the nationals. It
wouldn't really matter if I won or not; I'd
just like to try," she says.
As well as canoeing, Sharri says she en-
joys any sport. A Grade 10 student at Cen-
tral Huron Secondary School in Clinton, she
is a member of the downhill ski club and is
trying out for the volleyball team. She didn't
make the team when she tried out for
basketball and volleyball teams last year,
but she keeps trying.
In April, she'll be getting her mother,
Barb into a canoe for the first time for a 15
mile race to raise money for the Huron
County Foster Parents Association. They'll
be entering the cruising class so they can
take their time from Wingham to the
Wawanosh Conservation Area.
"My mom thinks it's a good idea and I'm
looking forward to it," she says.

Trustees can't agree with twinning schools
BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE
Some trustees and administration can't
agree that the savings from twinning
several separate schools in Huron and Perth
counties is worth the effort.
To prove his point that savings from twin-
ning schools could be turned over to pro-
gram costs for those schools, the director of
education, William Eckert, suggested the

$20,000 savings realized this year from ten-
tatively twinning two schools be turned back
to those two schools.
St. Joseph's separate school in Clinton and
St. Mary's separate school in Goderich have
been sharing a principal since school opened
this September. The board will have a
replacement for St. Joseph's former prin-
cipal Don Farwell. (Mr. Farwell is now
principal at Immaculate Conception school
in Stratford) for the beginning of January 1.
But meanwhile, the two schools have been
sharing principal Jim McDade, $20,000 of a
principal's salary has been saved and Mr.
Eckert suggested the money, or part of it, be
turned over to the two schools.
Trustee Vincent McInnes said while the
idea sounds good, he didn't want a prece-
dent set in case schools are annexed or twin-
ned in the future. If schools are twinned, it
was suggested that each school would want
the savings.
"I don't understand. When we talked
about twinning it was said nothing would be
saved " rpr„arkeil tnistPP l,nnis Maloney.
noting that Mr. Eckert's suggestion in-
dicates -there could be savings.
But, several trustees pointed out that the
$20,000 is a bookkeeping figure and doesn't
take into consideration the principal's
travelling costs between the two schools,
and the costs for extra principal's relief
time.
"Perhaps the saving is not quite that
much," stated Stratford trustee John
Devlin.
No action has been taken on the director's
suggestion.
