Do something about the site as well. That's the advice of a new publication released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Slte Improvement of Older Homing is meant for homeowners, builders, developers and designers looking for good examples of site rehabilitation in older pro- perties. It provides a step-by-step plan and detailed site design instructions that cover most uneradine oroiects. As well as discussing site improvement in general terms, the publication focuses on three typical site -improvement situations: the upgrading of existing housing, the adap- tation of a single large residence to several smaller units and the conversion of an in- stitutional building - a school, warehouse or factory - to residential uses. These present very different problems than new sites. The space avajlable is often restricted or poorly shaped. Conversion from a single-family residence to a triplex, for example, means that careful use must be made of all available space to provide the extra parking and private entrances the new tenants will require, and the individual outdoor areas that renters now expect. All changes, whether complicated conversions or simple upgrading, must maintain a balance between individual tastes and preferences and the need to blend in with the established character of the neighbourhood. Site Improvement of Older Housing presents actual site -upgrading projects that can be seen underway in neighborhoods across Canada every year. These include the addition of walkways, parking spaces, patios, decks and storage areas. Barrier - free access and low maintenance features are also described. These are popular im- provements, especially with older homeowners, as they make the site easier to use and less expensive to look after. The book's extensive use of plans, sketches and photographs illustrates the best use of plants and hard materials like wood and stone. Separate chapters are included on site im- provement for single dwellings and low- density multiple dwellings. Six case studies from Vancouver, Toronto, Guelph and Mon- treal, extensively illustrated, show com- prehensive improvements to the sites of older detached and row housing. These real- life projects illustrate the solutions discuss- ed throughout the book. Well-planned site improvement common- ly results in higher values for both the im- proved site and neighbouring properties. Site Improvement of Older Housing is in- tended to help the professional renovator and the do-it-yourselfer alike to avoid com- mon pitfalls and complete successful and at- tractive rehabilitation projects. Hospital to expand out-patient services Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich is to receive an annual grant of $19,400 to expand its out-patient physiotherapy services, it was announced by Health Minister Keith Norton. The grant will be added to the hospital's budget to cover additional staff salaries. The new service will begin as soon as recruitment is completed. The Alexandra Marine and General is one of 36 hospitals across the province to receive funds for new or expanded out-patient physiotherapy services. All the hospitals are located in areas designated underserviced by the Health Ministry and the Ontario Physiotherapy Association. "This program reflects the ministry's in- creasing emphasis on,.. -gut -patient, community-based services and reaffirms our commitment to provide quality health care in all areas of the province," said Nor- ton. More than $800,000 will be added to the 36 hospitals' budget to cover this year's start- up costs, salaries and operating expenses. It is estimated that more than 13,000 peo- ple will receive physiotherapy each year under the new and expanded services. The new service will be available in the following areas: Cochrane, Elgin, Grey - Bruce, Haliburton, Hastings, .Huron, Kent, Leeds -Grenville, Lennox -Addington, Manitoulin -Sudbury, Middlesex, Muskoka. Nipissing, Northumberland, Ottawa, Prescott -Russell, Renfrew, Timiskaming and Waterloo. Physiotherapists help patients to regain muscular strength and improve co- ordination and range of movement through instruction and the development of suitable exercise programs. Physiotherapy benefits many people including infants with birth defects, such as cerebral palsy and missing limbs, accident and stroke victims, and those who suffer from degenerative condi- tions such as arthritis. k i4i'JEPL' SUPER BUY! yjy• /mitt: ROOT BEER, COLA, GINGER ALE, ORANGE OR GRAPE Chateau Beverages CASE OF 24-10 FL OZ TINS 99 Also available Canada Dry beverages 6 pack of 30g nnL btls. at reg. price - plus btl. deposit ASST VAR BEANS OR CORN (14 FL OZ TIN) Green Giant Niblets 12 FL OZ TIN OUR REGULAR PRICE UP TO .99 CUT FROM CANADA'S FINEST GRADE "A" BEEF, BLADE, CHUCK SHORT RIB OR SHOULDER it Boneless Beef Roasts OUR REGULAR PRICE 5.051kg-2.29 Ib SAVE 1.32/kg-.60 Ib COMBINATION PACK.
