terminal will be used to bring opera from
the past, to the present day, for elementary
school aged children. By "punching in"
various opera terms and combinations of
voices, young people will try to discover
what opera is. A wide range of operatic
selections including Hansel and Greta! and
The Magic Flute will be used to demonstrate
emotions, acting and singing skills.
"The workshops are a great success
because the kids get to participate,"
commented Irene Wronski. "The focus is
not on serious education, but purely on
entertainment and participation. I guess
what we try to do is stimulate a pleasant
experience."
She stressed, "We want to have fun with
the audience. This is not serious opera."
The COCE was founded in July, 1980 as a
result of a grant from Imperial Oil Limited.
The Ensemble is an unique organization
that provides a launching ground for
Canadian talent in Canada, at the same time
enriching the lives of Canadians from all
walks of life with the beauty of a live
operatic performance.
Each year the COCE conducts a coast to
coast search for the best young Canadian
singers. Between nine and 12 artists,
representing all five voice categories, are
chosen to serve a one year apprenticeship
with the COCE, polishing their craft through
ullet
a comprehensive program of performance
advanced training with opera specialists
and internationally acclaimed singers,
conductors and directors.
The multi-level activities of the COCE
emphasize community out -reach. One off its
objectives is to introduce new audiences to
the world of live musical theatre in both an
entertaining, and informative manner. In
pursuit of this goal, the COCE has toured
throughout the province with its highly
successful artist in residence program.
In lieu of the "one night stands"
characterizing most touring companies, the
COCE spends a number of days in a com-
munity, staging a wide variety of programs
chosen with the needs of that particular
community in mind. Residency programs
include such activities as opera productions,
school presentations like The Toy Shop,
choral workshops and informal get-
togethers with local residents.
Following the production of The Toy Shop,
the COCE will feature the comic operetta
The Merry Widow, in English translation.
The show will be held on Nov. 17 at the Blyth
Memorial Hall.
Irene Wronski has a Mohammed and the
mountain philosphy about COCE. She noted,
"This is a way for us to bring opera to the
people. Instead of bringing people to the
opera.

Duplicate bridge is not
just another card game
By Anne Narejko
GODERICH - What is inexpensive to do,
can include the whole family, gives a person
a real mental workout, and can be quite en-
joyable? How about a good game of
duplicate bridge.
The Goderich Duplicate Bridge Club has
been running since the 1930's, according to
long time player Auleen Curry.'
"At that time everyone was just in-
terested in playing duplicate bridge, they
didn't care about joining the ACBL," she
commented.
The ACBL, or the American Contract
Bridge League, has affiliated clubs in
Canada, the United States, as well as
overseas. By joining this league, the
members can receive Rating Point Cer-
tificates which means the more points you
get, the higher you can advance.
These points are then sent to Memphis,
Tennessee, the headquarters of the league,
and put through a computer, where the
results are stored, and a postcard is sent
back to the player.
As well as the Rating Point Certificate,
members are allowed to play bridge in any
town that holds games and is part of the
ACBL. Goderich has had players from
Michigan, London, Stratford and the
Netherlands' play' duplicate bridge while
they were in town visiting relatives or
friends.
However, it is not mandatory that each
player join the league, according to
Goderich manager John Wood. Some people
just come out for the night's entertainment.'
The Goderich Club holds its games every
Tuesday nil/ht at the Goderich Legion with
Sweet Sixteen
Debbie Leigh
From the
Gang
an average of 24-27 hands being played an
evening.
The club has a president, Barbara Howe,
a corresponding secretary, Margaret Hall,
and two acting directors, Eleanor Erskine
and Helen Tench.
The directors are present at the games to
sort out any misunderstandings about rules,
or to solve a problem that the players don't
understand. In a sense, they are to duplicate
bridge what referees are to hockey.
Manager Wood is on hand to issue Rating
Points Certificates and he sends a monthly
report to the head office in Memphis.
The points .which a player earns goes
towards advancing them to a higher level.
For example, a beginner starts out as a
novice, and moves up to master, until even-
tually, if they are good enough, they become
a life master, which is the highest level they
can reach.
The Goderich Club tries to hold a novice
game every third Tuesday of the month for
beginners. The first time they play it doesn't
cost them anything, the second time, and all
the following times, it costs. them $1.50.
Regular players are charged $2. "The
game is for people of any age, and we're all
on a first name basis," added Wood.
Curry can. remember .when Goderich used
to hold large tournaments with people com-
ing from all over to participate.
"They would start at Friday noon and not
finish until Sunday at 6 p.m. Now that we
are affiliated with the ACBL, they think that
we are not large enough to hold these tour-
naments, so now we just have them for a
day."

BLYTH - The Canadian Opera Company
Ensemble (COCE ), Canada's only year
round operatic troupe will be paying a visit
to two area schools on Nov. 16.
The COCE will be bringing a staged
children's production called The Toy Shop to
Seaforth Public School in the morning and
Hullett Central School for an afternoon
peformance.
The Toy Shop focuses on two dolls, Paul
and Pauline who are "children" off a toy
maker, played by baritone Theodore Baerg.
The story involves the two mechanical wind-
up dolls and magic, dancing and musical
theatre will help to make this production
come alive for young people. Set in a fantasy
world of toys, games and tacking dolls, The
Toy Shop tries to prove that the powers of
love still overcome the tricks of magic.
Irene Wronski, Ensemble administrator
era t afort
was in Blyth on Nov. 1 to visit the Centre for
the Arts.
In describing the production she said,
"There is a lot of fantasy and m...gic in show,
there is even a gorilla, but I won't mention
where he comes into the picture."
The administrator noted the production is
a terrific way to introduce children to opera.
She said that the colorful show captures the
attention of its young audience.
"There is a lot of spoken dialogue, so the
production is a great entree for kids," she
explained.
Following the show, the students will have
a chance to participate in a special
demonstration program called Do It
Yourself Opera.
The children will explore some of the
building blocks off opera in a participation
and improvisation workshop. A computer

UNICEF Christmas card line-up
UNICEF's new collection of greeting
cards for the 1983 holiday season is
available now, featuring designs from ar-
tists the world over who have generously
donated their compositions to UNICEF.
The selection of cards is original and
varied and includes reproductions of works
by Canadians Andre Bergeron, Edwin
Holgate, Margot Lindsay, Robert Michener
and Pitaloosie Saila.
Quebec artist Andre Bergeron's "Oree"
depicts a winter scene. Matched with gold
foil -lined envelopes for festive appeal, the
cards and envelopes come in a pack of 10
and cost $9.
"Howe Sound Sunset" by Vancouver ar-
tist Robert Michener is another scenic com-
position and has been reproduced as a part
of the UNICEF selection through the
courtesy of The Canada Council. A pack of
10 cards and envelopes costs $8.
Margot Lindsay, an artist from Saska-
toon, Saskatchewan, was inspired to design
the needlepoint scene of children on a
homemade ice rink which she could see
from her window - and this has been
reproduced as UNICEF's card "Ice
Skating" which comes in a pack of 10 with
envelopes for $5.50.
Another design in the UNICEF selection is
"Arctic Madonna" by Inuit artist Pitaloosie
Saila from the Northwest Territories. The
original work was done in stonecut and sten-
cil and the card is printed on recycled
paper.
