The first of four concerts was a great success and more than 175 local residents filled the Bayfield arena for the musical evening. 200 enjoy "magical group" By Helen Owen A bonus for Bayfield and a triumph for Bayfield Lioness! That just about describes the concert held on Oct. 18 in the Community Centre. This, the first of a series of concerts spon- sored by the Bayfield Lioness, introduced the community to the Tapestry Singers. For about two hours these six young people engaged the attention of an audience of just under 200. The Rev. George Youmatoff, known for his own singing and expertise, said quite frankly that in the first instance he had come to support the Lioness, but he went on, "If all the audience reacted as I did they are certainly no longer in any doubt as to the varied talents and flexibility of the Tapestry Singers. Their very name suggests versatili- ty, and they certainly lived up to it. From the sometimes dull and demanding madrigals, which they managed to present in a fresh and humorous fashion, through Purcell, Mozart and Strauss, they kept the entire audience spellbound. "It was not until after the intermission, however, when they presented their contem- porary program that they really showed the sort of stuff of which they were made. The tribute to the Gershwins was excellent giv- ing the solo voices ample opportunity to display their talents; and the collection of Canadian folk songs was charming, especially Wayne Strongman's arrange- ment of `Little Old Sod Shanty in the West', completewith washboard, spoons and cook- ing pot. But it was the opening of the second half that particularly impressed me - Felix Girls - by Murray Schafer, a strange almost cacaphonious pot-pourri, in which the charms (or perhaps weaknesses) of Gret- chen and Mary Lou, Margaret and Jou Jou, Hermine, Claudette, Lotte and finally Irma were expounded upon. I had the opportunity of looking at the score later and frankly, it is the most impossible, involved and unlikely score I have ever seen, and I have seen a few. Yet this young group presented it in such a fashion that people literally sat on the edge of their seats to see what was coming next. Enough said. I came prepared to be bored. I went away an ardent fan of that magical group that calls itself the `Tapestry Singers'. It was not the individual voices, because I have heard better; it was not the magnificent background music, for they on- ly had a piano which they didn't use half the time. It was what six young people with average voices and a good director were able to do as an ensemble, as a team. If you have a chance to go arid see them, you'll find me there". The evening concluded with coffee and cookies as well as an opportunity to rneet the singers and talk to them about their work. There is no doubt that theirs is a nomadic existence, and yet, as they said, they get on well together, enjoy the travelling and the varied audiences with whom they come in contact. It was even more interesting to learn that the group are also involved in school workshops during the day time, offer - The Blyth Inn Blyth, Ontario Fully Licensed under the L.L.B.O. Their lively and often humorous approach must surely prove both stimulating and exciting for young people previously not exposed to these aspects of entertainment. With rehearsals, school and evening engagements there is no doubt that the group is obliged to work hard and long, facts belied by their lively and spirited perfor- mances. Talking to their business administrator, Janice Schuyler, it was revealed that plans are already in hand in connection with par- ticipation in Ontario's Bicentennial celebra- tions, as the Tapestry singers have created a musical revue evoking the glorious era of the Dominion Chautauquas. Their research has unearthed long -neglected music folios, and with these they will combine new works inspired by the history and culture of the province. The varied program to emerge promises entertainment for all ages, and the group will be on tour in 1984. If the Bicenten- nial Celebrations in Bayfield include the Tapestry Singers, and maybe they will, then a warm welcome is assured for thie 'Domi- nion Chautauqua'.
