Curling club news By John Patterson Sr. At Seaforth Curling Club, ice maker, Peter Jansen, has been working hard to have curling ice ready for the first draw on Oct. 27-28 which is mixed curling. The men's draw gets going on Oct. 31. It is hoped that last year's membership of around 125 will be improved upon this season. As noted in last week's advertise- ment, anyone new who wishes to try this very fine sport and make new friends, come and try it. The exercise is good, and the socializing too. Members Welcome The person to call in Seaforth is Ken Moore at 527-0508 and in Clinton Tim Collyer at 482-7842. New curlers may curl the first draw on a look-see basis and get a special rate for the season. The first social event is coming up on Nov. 5 at the Seaforth and District Community Centres, which is right across the road from the curling club. Steve Brown is special events chairman, and he reports that it is an open dance beginning at 9 p.rn. with lunch included in the price of $5 per person. This sounds like a real bargain for a good fun evening. The President of the ladies club this season is Irma Pryce and for the men's club, Ron McKay. First Spiel Neil Dolmage, chairman of the bonspiel committee has indicated that the first spiel is on Dec. 6. It is a farmer's open bonspiel and the persons to call your entries to are Bruce and Marjorie Coleman at 527-1938. The sponsors of this spiel are Topnotch Feeds Ltd. and Vincent Farm Equipment Ltd. of Seaforth. This is the first of curling news columns, with others to follow. The Redmen were beaten 22-1 by Listowel Lords and 42-0 by the first place Goderich Vikings, dropping their record to 0-5 with one game left in the schedule. On Oct. 18, CHSS played their best game off the season despite losing 22-1 to Listowel. Redmen Head Coach Ken Reidy described the game as his teams "finest hour". The Redmen were in the game until the fourth quarter but couldn't stop the Lords offense. Austin Roorda led the CHSS defense with 12 tackles and contributed offensively by booting a 35 -yard single. Defensive -end David O'Rourke had four tackles and one quarterback sack, the latter resulting in a 15 -yard loss. Quarterback Terry Dobson led the offense with 62 yards in rushing. Randy Vere ran for 37 yards, while Mike Lobb collected 29 yards on the ground. Goderich 42 Clinton 0 On Oct. 20, the undefeated Goderich Vikings came to Clinton and defeated the Redmen 42-0. The Vikings came into the game with no touchdowns scored against them and had a referee's call gone the other way, CHSS would have been the first team this season to score a major against them. Goderich scored on their first possession of the game when they marched the ball from their own 35 -yard line to the end zone in five plays. After CHSS's first drive stalled, Roorda drifted an end -over -end punt that scooted by the Goderich returner, after it appeared the ball touched him. The ball rolled into the end zone, where the Redmen pounced on it for the touchdown. The referee disallowed the touchdown, saying the Goderich punt returner did not touch the ball. After feverish complaints by the CHSS coaching staff were ignored, the ball came out to the Goderich 20 -yard line. With three minutes left in the half, punter Roor'a recovered his own punt around midfield. The Redmen offense was unable to do anything with the ball and lost possession on a third and a little over a yard gamble. At the half, the Vikings were up by 21 points. A beautiful pass and run play in the third quarter broke the gathe wide-open for Goderich. A Vikings receiver snuck behind the Redmen secondary and scampered 60 yards for the touchdown. The Redmen offense coughed up the ball on their own 40 -yard line with 10 minutes left in the game. CHSS attempted a reverse but a poor handoff resulted in a fumble and Viking recovery. A few plays later, Goderich scored on a two -yard run. Goderich went on to score once more on a 55 -yard punt return to make the final score 42-0. Following the game, Coach Reidy praised the improved play of his team. "We really did well. We made a lot of mistakes but we have improved," Mr. Reidy said. According to the coach, the long pass and punt return for touchdowns by Goderich were the key mistakes that hurt his team. Special mention goes out to Roorda and Mike Powell, who led the team defensively with 10 and five tackles. Travis Lyndon also played a strong game at the safety position. Dobson also played well, intercepting a pass in the fourth quarter. Offensively, Vere led with 62 yards rushing and Mike Lobb had 26 yards. Offensive Captain Doug MacLean and of- fensive guard Shawn Simple also made some good plays. John Beattie played a good game on the punt return team, running back four for 45 yards. Throughout the Goderich game, the CHSS Redmen didn't give up, despite the score and deserve credit for their effort. CHSS's final game of the season is this week in Stratford to face the second -place squad. The CHSS Redmen showed an improved effort last week despite losing two games. Pictured is a Goderich Viking running back about to be tackled by a Redmen defender. The first -place Vikings won the game 42-0. Expert, now from Oshawa, Mike Rensby with 123 points; and with 107 points, Hully Gully sponsored rider Collins came in third. The next competitor was back with 86 points. Chuck began racing back in 1973 at the age of 9, and moved through the motocross ranks from schoolboy class to "expert" level. Riding under No. 191, and with the backing of Hully Gully, where he is also race director, Chuck has managed to overcome injuries and other obstacles to finish in the top three in the province. Earlier in the season, Chuck and his mechanic father, Randy, toured the country in events like the Toronto Supercross, the Expert Nationals and the Calgary Supercross. Next year, Chuck's looking forward to an even better season, and already he's looking at ways to make his bikes work better and go faster, and he's getting all the physical bugs out as well. Motocross is a physically demanding sport and some "say the roost demanding in the world, exceeding even soccer. It requires daily work-outs to be able to maintain the stamina to go as long as 40 minutes full -out in the longer races. At 19, Chuck has reached high, but there's always next year and a little higher. Chuck is also an apprentice mechanic at Hully Gully and after completing his ap- prenticeship next spring, will be dividing his mechanical and racing duties with the organizing and teaching of motocross schools and seminars across Western Ontario.
