lin Blyth residents never know what may be coming down the main street. In the summer
months it's a common sight to see furniture, lumber and sets being transportated to the
Summer Festival. On Tuesday a grand piano was rolled down the street to the Memorial
Hall. ( Wendy Somerville photo)
The Blyth Memorial Hall has given birth to the baby grand piano as a result of $14,000
worth of donations. Movers finished the final touches on Tuesday and now the piano may
be used for future performances, including the Great Grand Piano Gala to be held on
Nov. 4. ( Wendy Somerville)
Blyth Memorial Hall gives birth to baby grand piano
By Wendy Somerville
The Blyth Memorial Hall seems to be 'in
tune' with the needs of the Blyth Festival.
On Oct. 11, Blyth Memorial Hall gave
birth to a baby Grand Piano from Hanover.
The piano is a Heintzman and is Canadian
made with Canadian wood. The price tag
was $14,000 all of which was donated by
various organizations and people.
According to Sheila Richards, a member
of the Board of Directors for the Blyth
Festival, for each $250 donated, a piano key
was given.
"We didn't give the donaters an actual
piano key, laughed Sheila Richards. "We
gave them a receipt instead. The piano key
was just a promotional idea."
Though the piano arrived late, spirits
were still high as movers carried the heavy
piano into the hall and onto the stage. After
the piano was assembled, Judy Morton, a
member of the Search Committee for the
Klompen Feest plans underway
The first meeting for Klompen Feest '84
took place on Sept. 20 at Mrs. Van Damme's
Holiday Lodge.
Something new had been added by the
Committee this year. There will be a dance
with "Whiskey Jack" on May 19, 1984 to
wind up the Klompen Feest weekend. The
date and band have been scheduled so keep
that date open to help join in the festivities.
More plans tor Klompen Feest '84 will
take place in the next and future meetings.
The committee is again inviting all in-
terested citizens to participate by ideas and
help. Everyone is welcome to attend the
next meeting to be held October 18, 8 p.m.,
at Mrs. Van Damme's Holiday Lodge in
Clinton. - by Joanne Carr

First. his name, Billy Idol sounds like the
girls should love him as Donny Osmond was
loved. Secondly, Idol's music is not the
music off an HM man.
Certainly, some of the songs are solid
rock. Take, for example, White Wedding.
This song has power. Steve Stevens, doing
guitars for Idol, deserves credit - his riffs
positively snarl. Idol intones the words so
that they are threatening. What, after all, is
more threatening than Big Brother?
Yet when you look at songs such as Hot in
the City and It's So Cruel, you're dealing
with songs playable on BX -93! This tough -
looking boy can crank out a tune worthy of
Willy Nelson!
Also of interest - Idol's voice differs from
song to song. At times you'd swear you were
listening to an unknown Bowie cut, a Godlen
Earring gem or a Brian Adams track. The
songs Love Calling and Congo Man (actual-
ly an extension of the former) have an
African touch.
Idol is a versatile artist, capable of dif-
ferent voice styles and music styles. Just
wait until he changes his dress style to loose -
fitting suits and free -hanging ties. Then
we'll know he's really a Bowie fan, shaping
his life after the Man. Rate: 7-10

Jug Band kicks off series
If you're a musical whiz on the comb, or
dynamite on the pop bottle, have we got a
concert for you. Chris and Ken Whitely, in
concert Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. at Blyth
Memorial Hall, will teach you how to form
your own jug band with materials from
around the house. And so you won't feel em -
harassed, here's a great excuse — bring a
kid! The concert kicks off the Blyth Centre
for the Arts' 83-84 children's series.
The Whitelys have been performing tor
children and 'adults for eighteen years.
Together they play over a dozen in-
struments. The brothers are founding
members of the Original Sloth Band, and
are popular regulars in the Mariposa in the
School's program. They've played with Raf-
fi, Sharon, Lois and Bram and recently pro-
duced their own hit children's record,
"Junior Jug Band".
The Whitely Brothers Concert is the first
of four events in the Blyth Centre's
children's series. The next, is an afternoon
called "Join In", with April and Susan of the
Mr. Dressup show on Saturday December
10th at 2 p.m. Theatre Beyond Words brings
Potato People on April 14th and Rag and
Bone Puppet Theatre conclude the series
with The Nightingale on May 5th at 2 p.m.
Series tickets are $7 for all four events, and
single tickets are $3.50 each for every event.
