$23,000 grant
awarded
Grants totalling more than $23,000 have
been awarded to a group of agricultural,
community and professional organizations
to help fund their activities on behalf of
agriculture and the province's rural
residents, Agriculture and Food Minister
Dennis Timbrell announced recently.
The Canadian Council of 4-11 Clubs will
receive nearly $11,000 for planning national
conferences and funding exchange pro-
grams for 4-H members and leaders across
Canada.
The Junior Farmers' Association of On-
tario will receive $5,000 to provide travel op-
portunities and scholarships for members.
The funds will also assist with the associa-
tion's annual conference and finance self
help and community betterment activities.
The Union Culturelle des Franco-
Ontariennes will use its $3,500 grant to en-
courage the personal development of
Franco-Ontarian women, both in the home
and in the community.
A grant of $1,500 will go to the Interna-
tional Plowing Match which is marking its
70th anniversary this year. The grant will
help provide"demonstrations on the art of
plowing, display products and services that
contribute to efficient farms and present the
latest developments in science and
technology.
The ministry will also contribute $1,000 to
five annual open -house celebrations, called
"College Royals". Grants' of $200 each will
go to four colleges of agricultural
technology - new Liskeard, Kemptville,
Ridgetown and Centralia - as well as (o the
Ontario Agricultural College at the Univer-
sity of Guelph.
The Ontario Association of Agricultural
Societies will receive a grant of $500. The
Association, formed in 1906, furthers the ad-
vancement of fall fairs through sharing of
ideas and methods. This year its members
staged 230 fall fairs.
The Ontario Horticultural Society will
receive $500 for its work with .the province's
horticultural societies, volunteer groups in-
volved in the beautification of rural com-
munities. The money will go toward the
association's annual convention and the
preparation of promotional materia:.
The Entomological Society of Ontario will
use its $500 grant to help publish the pro-
ceedings of its annual meeting. Founded
over 100 years ago to promote the science of
entomology, the society serves as an impor-
tant resource group for agriculture and pro-
vides insect information used in the
ministry's pest control recommendations.
New regulations
fc,r farm vehicles
Early in 1977, new regulations were in-
troduced for over -dimensional farm
vehicles on Ontario highways. Under these
regulations farmers are no longer required
to get a special permit to move over -
dimensional implements. However,
farmers are now prohibited from moving
agricultural vehicles on certain highways.
Also, new provisions have been made for
lighting and warning lamps on over -
dimensional vehicles. In some instances, a
farmer may require an escort vehicle.
Check with your local police to make certain
your farm equipment meets the law. "DO IT
OUR WAY - IT WON'T HURT". This has
been a message from the farm Safety
Association.
